A cyclist was taken to hospital with serious injuries after being pinned under a vehicle in Carp on Monday.

Ottawa Fire Services freed the injured man, but also credited a quick-thinking bystander.

Firefighters were called to the scene of the collision, at the intersection of March and Carp roads, after being notified by the Ottawa Police Service at about 3:04 p.m. on Aug. 24.

A rapid extrication process began after fire crews arrived at the location and found the cyclist trapped beneath the vehicle. The vehicle was stabilized and secured with cribbing before a hydraulic ram was used to raise it.

The man was safely extricated at 3:18 p.m., fire services said.

“Ottawa Fire Services would like to recognize and commend the bystander who stopped to help,” a social-media post said. “Before Firefighters arrived, the bystander used a jack to lift the vehicle and relieve some of the pressure on the trapped cyclist.”

According to an Ottawa Paramedic Service spokesperson, an adult male was taken to hospital with serious, but non-life-threatening injuries and was in stable condition.
