Winston Lee, one of the seven Cornell University fraternity members implicated in a gang-rape case involving a fellow student, was recorded apologizing to the alleged victim for facing backlash after the alleged assault.

The apology, from a November 2024 phone call recorded by Jane Doe, has recently surfaced and offers an account of conversations between the accuser and the seven frat bros named in the suit.

Another of the seven had claimed he was a victim of the accuser, adding another dimension to a sensitive case that has triggered a political firestorm and debates about consent.

Why Winston Lee Apologized To Jane Doe After The Incident

According to the New York Post, Doe reached out to Lee about three weeks after the reported sexual assault took place, and he initially had an apologetic tone.

In the recorded call, Lee expressed sympathy for the woman, saying, “I’m so sorry about all like the backlash you’re getting from this.”

Doe, in her reply, told Lee she was at the time “completely and totally intoxicated” and that she was given multiple sedatives before being “upwards of 8 to 10 men” filed into the room at the Chi Phi frat house.

When Doe said that what happened to her is “classified as a gang rape,” it appeared to rub Lee the wrong way as his tone subsequently shifted. He said, “What’s the purpose for why you decided to call me?”

Lee maintained that he didn’t know what was happening in the room. “There was nothing to say that … anything was happening in that room or anything,” he claimed in the call.

Lee’s name reportedly appeared in the Snapchat group where fellow frat bro and accused Jonathan Newell announced that there was “free p-ssy.” He also allegedly snorted ketamine off Doe’s body.

All About Jane Doe’s Sexual Assault Allegations

Doe alleged that multiple members of Cornell’s Chi Phi fraternity drugged and sexually abused her in October 2024. She filed her lawsuit in September, naming seven fraternity brothers, now dubbed the “Cornell 7,” as well as Cornell University.

As reported by The Guardian, Doe arrived at the frat house, “visibly intoxicated as she had consumed about 10 standard drinks within the past 3 hours,” and stated that the sexual activity that followed went on for hours.

Doe was reportedly taken to a “quieter area” before being propositioned to engage in a threesome, which, according to the suit, was assault because, “In her drunken state, plaintiff was incapable of consenting to this proposition.”

In her lawsuit, two men allegedly pressured her into taking Ketamine with them, “a drug she had never done before,” the lawsuit claimed. She was said to have been further plied with marijuana and “Jamaican Liquor.”

Five extra frat members reportedly responded to a “free p-ssy upstairs” advert posted on their Snapchat group.

The suit also alleged that Doe was repeatedly “slapped” and she had no means of escaping a room full of “predatory, fraternity men” as her phone happened to be on the other side of the room.

Doe lost consciousness around 5.45 am and after waking up, she returned to her sorority house in a state of shock, where she noticed a bruise on her buttocks and took medication for a urinary tract infection.

Another Cornell 7 Frat Bro, Matthew Ingalls, Told Jane Doe She Said She Was ‘Sober’

Aside from Lee, other defendants’ conversations with the accuser have also been made public. Doe also called Matthew Ingalls, who was supposedly the one who invited her to the fraternity house.

In a separate report by the New York Post, Doe and Ingalls reportedly spoke about her level of intoxication, with Ingalls claiming to believe she was sober.

“You did tell me you were sober, you did. You said you hadn’t been anywhere,” Ingalls said on the recorded phone call. Doe asserted that she was “100% sure” he knew she was already intoxicated.

Ingalls also reportedly claimed to have been the victim, as he had consumed too much Ketamine and alcohol to be in a state to consent, and that Doe was the one who actually assaulted him.

Political Firestorm Erupts Over The Cornell 7 Rape Case

The case has sparked a lot of reactions across the political divide, with some on either side of the aisle having different opinions about the alleged gang-rape and the presence of informed consent or lack thereof.

According to the Washington Examiner, Democratic lawmakers, including Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, have commended Doe for coming forward and accused Cornell University of inadequately investigating the incident.

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has also come out in support of Jane Doe and accused institutions like Cornell University of fostering rape cultures and shielding abusers.

On the other hand, conservative commentators have cautioned against coming to hasty conclusions, pointing out text messages where the alleged victim said that “none of the sexual stuff was illegal.”

Doe’s attorneys have said those texts were part of a trauma response as she processed what had happened to her.

Conservative podcaster Megyn Kelly expressed sympathy for Jane Doe for falling “into the clutches of men who are immoral or at least were behaving immorally that night.”

However, she said that as “immoral” as they were, the idea of locking them up for “20-plus years” is an entirely different question.

Students Rally Against Cornell University

Cornell University has faced mounting pressure over its handling of the case, with several students questioning the institution’s response.

Reuters reported that on October 5, Cornell students staged a mass rally in solidarity with Doe and called for an external investigation into Cornell University’s handling of the gang-rape case.

The protesters also wanted independent hearings and more consistent and stronger sanctions for sexual assaults that take place on campus, as well as improvements to the training of campus police so they could better respond to sexual harassment.
