The failed execution of Christa Pike has taken an extraordinary turn, with her legal team revealing that she is now awake and communicating after surviving the attempt.

Pike was taken to a Tennessee hospital after officials were unable to complete her execution at Riverbend Maximum Security Institution in Nashville.

Her attorneys now say she remains in critical care, while the circumstances of her survival have raised questions about what comes next for the woman they describe as having endured an unprecedented medical ordeal.

Christa Pike Is Awake And Speaking After Failed Execution Attempt

Christa Pike is now awake and talking, according to a statement her attorneys released to PEOPLE on October 6.

Her lawyers said, “Against all odds, Christa Pike is conscious, speaking and continues to receive critical medical care.”

They described her recovery as “medically unprecedented,” while cautioning that her prognosis remained unclear and that they expected “a long recovery.”

In the meantime, Pike remains hospitalized after the state of Tennessee was unable to complete her execution at Riverbend Maximum Security Institution in Nashville on September 30, despite administering two rounds of pentobarbital.

Her attorneys said she is still shackled to her hospital bed “despite the severe damage she endured to her arms.”

The failed attempt to execute Christa Pike has now led to a major change inside Tennessee’s prison system.

According to CBS News, Frank Strada, commissioner of the Tennessee Department of Correction, announced that he will step down later in October as Gov. Bill Lee’s independent review examined why the Sept. 30 lethal injection failed.

Strada said he believed his department’s personnel followed proper protocol, but that stepping aside was “in the best interest of Tennesseans” while the review proceeded.

Lee accepted Strada’s resignation and said, “Commissioner Strada has served with integrity, and I appreciate his willingness to put the interests of Tennesseans first during this difficult moment.” An interim commissioner is expected to be named later.

Pike’s attorneys also responded to Strada’s departure, noting that it was justified. However, they argued that his resignation did not address what happened to their client.

“The resignation of Commissioner Strada is justified, but it does nothing to help Christa now,” they said.

The attorneys added that the failed execution reflected “a systemic failure that goes far beyond any one person” and said they hoped the independent review would expose problems within Tennessee’s death-penalty system.

Christa Pike’s Lawyers Warned Her Execution Could Be ‘Difficult And Perhaps Cruel’

Questions about the execution process had been raised before Pike was taken into the execution chamber.

The Guardian reported that James Crowson, a former attorney who represented the convicted murderer during part of her post-conviction appeals, explained that he was not surprised that the procedure encountered serious problems.

“Well, I can’t say I’m surprised,” Crowson said. According to him, Pike’s defense filings had warned that she had compromised veins and that establishing intravenous access could be difficult.

Crowson said those filings indicated the procedure could be “a difficult and perhaps cruel procedure for her because it was going to put her at risk for exactly what happened.”

The former attorney also pointed to Pike’s underlying medical circumstances, saying the injuries reported after the failed execution appeared consistent with the concerns raised beforehand.

The warnings surrounding Christa Pike’s veins became part of a broader legal effort when her attorneys asked a Tennessee court to preserve evidence from the failed execution.

In an emergency filing, the lawyers argued that records and physical and electronic evidence could be crucial to determining what happened inside Riverbend Maximum Security Institution.

The attorneys specifically alleged that the execution team failed to recognize that Pike’s IV lines were not properly placed before administering the second dose of pentobarbital.

“Apparently at no point did any member of the execution team realize that the IV lines were not correctly placed or that the veins had blown and that the pentobarbital was, in whole or in part, entering Ms. Pike’s body,” the lawyers wrote.

They further alleged that, rather than correcting the problem, the Department of Correction prepared another set of syringes and administered another dose.

The filing further noted that preserving evidence was necessary because litigation could follow from what the lawyers described as violations of Pike’s constitutional rights. They wrote that officials had “an affirmative duty to preserve all relevant physical, written, and electronic evidence.”

The effort by Pike’s lawyers to preserve evidence from her failed execution came alongside a recording that details the fears she had expressed weeks before Tennessee attempted to put her to death.

The Blast explained that in the recording, the 50-year-old discussed concerns about her veins and the possibility that problems with intravenous access could leave her experiencing a prolonged and painful procedure.

Pike specifically referenced Tony Carruthers, whose May execution was halted after officials struggled to establish IV access. “Tony Carruthers lived out my worst nightmare, detail for detail, and I don’t want to go through that,” she said.

Pike also admitted that she did not have “good veins” and questioned whether the physician assigned to her execution would be able to establish a central line. Dr. Mark Fowler, who was involved in Carruthers’ failed execution, was also involved in Pike’s procedure.

Pike had sought alternative execution methods, including an all-female firing squad or hanging, but those requests were rejected.
