Three episodes into Apple TV’s Cape Fear, I think it is safe to say that the show is not interested in giving us a straightforward cat-and-mouse thriller that its movie predecessors were. In the first two episodes, Max Cady (played by Javier Bardem) had been set up to be a man with a supernatural ability to psychologically torment people to the point of doubting reality itself. Episode 3 flips that dynamic in a fascinating way. The show has flaws, but it is still compelling. FandomWire gave it a mixed review, awarding it 5 out of 10.

The title of Episode 3 is Phantom Sensations. Most of it spends much of its runtime widening the cracks already forming within the Bowden family. For most of the episode, the focus is on these growing fractures. Then the final few minutes pull the rug out from under us. A mysterious woman emerges from Max’s past, bringing with her a revelation that suggests there is far more to him than the terrifying figure we have seen so far. Suddenly, the biggest mystery in Cape Fear is no longer what Max will do next. It’s what happened to him before he ever crossed paths with the Bowdens.

Here’s Cape Fear in summary:

Who Is Juliette Lewis’ Mysterious Character?

The biggest reveal in episode 3 (Cape Fear debuted with two episodes, and it airs one episode each week) is the identity of the masked woman. She is revealed to be played by Juliette Lewis. Now, this is a clever bit of casting, for Lewis essayed the role of Danielle Bowden in 1991’s Cape Fear, one of Martin Scorsese’s best movies. However, this is a whole new character. Her appearance is unsettling in that she seems familiar with Max. Earlier in the episode, she mistakenly knocked on Anna’s (Amy Adams) motel room door as she was looking for him. She claims she wants to sing a song for him (Max) before disappearing.

The scene feels bizarre and random. By the end, it turns out to be a warning. Unlike everyone else, the woman is not afraid or unsettled at all of Max. On the contrary, she appears to be stalking and tormenting him with a similar persistence with which he has been stalking the Bowdens. It is an interesting reversal. It also makes her a dangerous character.

What Happens to Max When He Watches the VHS Tape?

The final sequence is easily the most important scene in the episode. Max returns to his home and realizes somebody has broken in. He finds a television and a VHS tape. There is also an envelope waiting for him. When he plays the tape, he finds that the mysterious woman has recorded a personal message for him.

In the video, she sings the song “Jingle of a Dog Collar“, and it seems as though she knows him intimately. Then Max finds the dog collar in the envelope. The sight of the object triggers something in him. It feels like a psychological breakdown. We see flashbacks of his difficult childhood and how he was a victim of his abusive father (something he had vaguely hinted at earlier). The implication here is quite terrifying. Long before Max became this almost mythical monster terrorizing the Bowdens, he was an abuse victim himself. It is the abuse’s continuing legacy.

What Does the Ending Mean for Anna and the Bowdens?

I feel that the ending of Phantom Sensation is bad news for the Bowdens, even if Max is vulnerable here for the first time (not including his prison time). Throughout the episode, the point that every Bowden family member is isolated in some manner is hammered home. Tom (Patrick Wilson) is inching towards infidelity. Natalie, his daughter, is falling under the influence of a mysterious new friend. The troubled son of the family remains unstable. Anna, though, feels increasingly trapped in the emotional dance with Max.

The arrival of Lewis’ mysterious new characters suggests that the story is becoming much bigger than a simple revenge plot. Someone from Max’s past has returned. She is carrying secrets powerful enough to reduce him to a gibbering wreck. That means the central mystery may not be whether Max will destroy the Bowdens. It may be whether the truth about Max’s past destroys everyone involved.

My reading of the ending is that Episode 3 marks a turning point. The first two episodes asked whether Max Cady was capable of terrorizing the Bowdens. We already know that the answer is yes. Episode 3 asks a much more interesting question: what happened to Max Cady that even he is terrified of remembering? The answer is almost certainly hidden somewhere in the story of the woman who just declared war on him.
