A 69-year-old Canadian tourist has been killed at Kruger National Park after a firearm was accidentally discharged, according to reports from South African media.

The incident happened near Phabeni Gate at a bush braai (or picnic) site, reports South African TV News channel ENCA. Police are investigating.

According to a statement from South African National Parks (SANParks) to ENCA, the tourist, who has not yet been identified, was part of a group staying outside the park and had entered to attend the bush braai, hosted by a private company permitted to operate within the park.

“SANParks extends its heartfelt condolences to the family, friends and loved ones of the deceased during this difficult time,” the statement reads, according to ENCA.

The incident has been under investigation by police, and cases of culpable homicide and reckless handling of a firearm have been opened, reports the South African newspaper The Citizen.

SANParks says the incident happened on Wednesday night, reports South Africa’s East Coast Radio.
