Blue Jays holding their breath as Trey Yesavage prepares to see knee specialist

An MRI confirmed that Toronto rookie pitcher suffered a meniscus injury during Tuesday's game against the Houston Astros.

Trey Yesavage’s season is suddenly in peril.

When he exited the mound at Houston’s Daikin Park on Tuesday to start the third inning, his left knee buckled.

That was the first bad sign.

An MRI was taken that showed an injury to Yesavage’s meniscus, the second bad sign.

The third discouraging sign emerged when Blue Jays manager John Schneider announced Yesavage is scheduled to visit a specialist on Monday to determine the next steps.

Schneider wasn’t exactly forthcoming when he dropped the news of the MRI and the scheduled visit, but that’s par for the course when information is king.

Is surgery a possibility?

He did add a sombre observation when Schneider informed media at Wrigley that  surgery “is always a possibility” when a visit to a specialist gets scheduled.

“We’re obviously hoping to avoid that.”

It goes without saying.

Entering Thursday’s make-up game in Chicago at Wrigley Field, the Jays had won three straight series, including a very dramatic comeback win Wednesday in Houston when the Astros led 3-0, only to have Jesus Sanchez go deep before Ernie Clement delivered the fatal blow in the 10th inning on a two-run homer to give Toronto a 5-4 victory.

Thursday’s make-up game against the host Cubs represented the series rubber match.

How is the Blue Jays’ rotation holding up?

In theory and despite the low odds, the Jays remain in the hunt for a wild-card spot.

Depending on what gets revealed next week following Yesavage’s visit, the odds figure to decrease.

Dylan Cease, who made the start on Thursday, is the only true legitimate starter who has avoided any extended time on the injured list.

Recent acquisition Jameson Taillon didn’t exactly leave a favourable impression in his debut Wednesday, while Jose Soriano — who certainly has the potential to emerge as a key contributor — is expected to make his debut with the Jays on Friday in Philadelphia.

In a season-long theme of injuries, Yesavage becomes the latest victim.
