Shiv is one of the most aggressive carry characters in Deadlock. His abilities include a mixture of close-range shotgun damage, bleed effects, mobility, and an execute that can quickly turn a fight around. His Rage mechanic rewards players who can maintain pressure, and Bloodletting gives him the durability to survive fights.
Deadlock is officially back.
Valve just dropped the massive “City Never Sleeps” update, adding:
-six new heroes
-major visual overhaul of the map and neutral units
-HUD improvements
Players immediately came flooding back. Deadlock pushed past its previous 171,490-player… pic.twitter.com/dCmgK6fn0o
Right now, you want to build him as a hybrid bruiser with good close-range weapon damage, sustain, and mobility. With the right build, you’ll be able to repeatedly enter and exit fights. The new update also buffed his shotgun’s alternate fire, which should give you more value. Here’s the best Shiv build in Deadlock.

These are the current meta Shiv item choices with situational options depending on the match and the heroes you’re up against.
Early Game
- Restorative Shot
- Close Quarters
- Mystic Regeneration
- Battle Vest
- High-Velocity Rounds
Restorative Shot gives useful lane sustain while complementing Shiv’s shotgun. You want Close Quarters because Shiv naturally wants to fight at short range, while also helping him generate Rage more efficiently when its conditions are met.
Mystic Regeneration gives you additional ability sustain, and Battle Vest gives Shiv some extra durability as fights become more frequent. High-Velocity Rounds can be added when you need more reliable weapon performance.
Mid Game
- Bullet Resist Shredder
- Radiant Regeneration
- Hunter’s Aura
- Fleetfoot
- Express Shot
- Heroic Aura
Bullet Resist Shredder helps Shiv’s weapon damage against targets with bullet resistance. Radiant Regeneration improves his ability to remain on the map, while Hunter’s Aura supports his close-range fighting style.
Fleetfoot is useful for closing distance and repositioning, while Express Shot and Heroic Aura further develop his weapon-oriented damage. The exact purchase order should depend on the match rather than being treated as a fixed sequence.
Late Game
- Lucky Shot
- Glass Cannon
- Point Blank
- Berserker
Lucky Shot can significantly increase Shiv’s weapon damage output. Glass Cannon is an aggressive option for games where you need additional damage, although sacrificing survivability can make mistakes more costly.
Point Blank naturally fits Shiv’s close-range combat pattern, while Berserker provides another way to increase his fighting power.
For defensive or crowd-control-heavy matchups, consider Dispel Magic, Spirit Resilience, Debuff Reducer, Counterspell, Plated Armor, Unstoppable, or Juggernaut instead of blindly completing the offensive build.
Recommended Skill Upgrade Order
Serrated Knives → Slice and Dice → Bloodletting → Killing Blow
Your ability priorities can change depending on matchup, but Serrated Knives is generally the strongest starting point. In most situations, you’ll be starting with this regardless of matchup.
Best Shiv Combos and How to Play Him
Image Credit: ValveShiv’s abilities work best when chained together rather than used independently. The basic idea is to build Rage while applying sustained damage, then use the empowered state to maximize your next sequence.
A simple combo you can do is:
Serrated Knives → Shotgun attacks → Slice and Dice → Bloodletting → Killing Blow
Start by throwing Serrated Knives to apply bleed and force the opponent to respect your damage. Follow with close-range shotgun fire, using Shiv’s movement tools to stay on top of the target.
Slice and Dice damages enemies along the dash and reduces their Spirit Resist. This makes it useful both as an initiation tool and as part of an ability-damage sequence. Its full-Rage version also creates an echo that repeats the dash’s damage shortly afterward.
Bloodletting reduces part of incoming damage, allowing you to survive bursts and then clear some of that deferred damage when activated. Knowing when to use it is crucial when diving into multiple enemies.
Once an enemy reaches Killing Blow’s threshold, use the ultimate to execute them. Shiv’s current threshold is 18% of the enemy’s health, with the final upgrade adding another 10 percentage points. A successful execution also allows Killing Blow to be recast during its short reset window.
You can also use it as a gap closer when necessary. Shiv’s 12-meter cast range allows him to leap toward an enemy, so waiting exclusively for the execute can sometimes mean missing an opportunity to secure a kill or reposition.
Maintaining Rage
Rage is the main part of Shiv’s kit. After unlocking Killing Blow, dealing damage fills his Rage meter, which holds 10 points. At full Rage, Shiv receives an 8% damage bonus and unlocks enhanced versions of his other abilities.
Full Rage gives Serrated Knives additional current-health damage and a slow. Slice and Dice gains its returning echo, and Bloodletting becomes more forgiving. So make sure to build up Rage before committing to a major fight.
The new update also changed full-Rage Serrated Knives so that the knives deal 3.5% of the target’s current health on impact, so you can use it against high-health targets at the start of a fight.
