Ravi Kahlon’s decision to not run in the 2026 provincial election was almost as surprising as the snap election being called in the first place.

Article content

Kahlon had been one of the NDP’s most prominent ministers, first as Minister of Housing and Municipal Affairs, then as Minister of Jobs and Economic Growth.

Article content

Kahlon had been elected for the NDP in Delta North in 2017, 2020 and 2024. His departure may leave what had been a relatively safe NDP seat up for grabs.

Article content

The same goes for Richmond-Steveston, where another former NDP minister, Kelly Greene, decided not to run.

Article content

Greene had won the riding in 2020 and 2024, and served as the Minister of Emergency Management and Climate Readiness. But she publicly opposed the government’s approval of the expansion of the Tilbury LNG plant in Delta in July, and chose not to run in 2026.

Greene had won in 2024 by only 484 votes, barely edging out Conservative Michelle Mollineaux. The deciding factor may have been an independent candidate, Jackie Lee, who picked up 10 per cent of the vote. Lee was originally running as a B.C. United candidate.

Article content

The website 338Canada, which makes projections based on polls, has both Delta North and Richmond-Steveston characterized as toss-ups in the Oct. 24 election, with Delta North leaning NDP and Richmond-Steveston leaning Conservative.

Article content

The NDP candidate in Delta North is Todd Schierling. He has been a firefighter since 1996 with the Surrey Fire Service, where he is currently working as a Suppression Fire Captain. He is also president of the B.C. Professional Firefighters’ Association.

Article content

The Conservative candidate is Monica Mohan, a lawyer from North Delta who is fluent in Punjabi and Hindi. Kuldeep Rangi is running for CentreBC.

Article content

In Richmond-Steveston, Bruce Kong hopes to retain the seat for the NDP. Gordon Zhang is the Conservative candidate, while Barry Wosk is running for CentreBC. Keenan Yang is contesting the riding for the CanWest Party, and Robert Evans is running as an independent.
