They live in three of B.C.’s largest cities by land area, but voters in Langley, Abbotsford and Chilliwack are feeling squeezed. Groceries and gasoline are expensive, traffic is terrible and it’s hard to find a doctor.

That discontent helped Conservatives take back several seats from the NDP in the 2024 provincial election. The blue wave wasn’t enough to carry the party to power, but voters sent eight Tory MLAs to Victoria.

Article content

The party wants to keep all eight seats this time around, hoping 2024 was a return to form for the region. Before 2020, when the NDP had a historic breakthrough, Langley, Abbotsford and Chilliwack were a conservative stronghold.

But times have changed. Several ridings were close in 2024, and although Conservative candidates won, it was by a margin of less than five per cent in Langley-Willowbrook and Langley-Walnut Grove. It’s here where increased urbanization could allow the NDP to make inroads.

Article content

Several candidates in the Fraser Valley have experience in government. This election will pit former NDP MLAs from 2020 to 2024, like Andrew Mercier in Langley-Willowbrook, Pam Alexis in Abbotsford-Mission, and Kelly Paddon in Chilliwack-Cultus Lake, against Conservative incumbents in seven of the eight ridings.

Article content

Only Abbotsford-Mission has a Conservative newcomer after MLA Reann Gasper stepped aside to make way for former Tory leader Kerry-Lynne Findlay to run in a byelection that didn’t happen because of the snap election. Now Findlay’s gone and Darryl Kropp will try to hold onto the seat for the Conservatives. Alexis, the NDP candidate, has been campaigning for 59 days straight.

Raising the stakes — and adding to the uncertainty — is continued change across the region. Since 2024, rapid population growth has started to slow, the SkyTrain line that will eventually link Langley to Surrey and Vancouver is on the horizon, and dump trucks and excavators have ripped up Highway 1 to create more lanes to Abbotsford, but not Chilliwack.
