After all the ballots were counted in 2024, voters in these five ridings nominated three NDP MLAs, one Green and one Conservative. With this year’s public opinion polls showing Conservatives slightly ahead of the NDP, some of these ridings could be flipped tonight after the final votes are counted.

West Vancouver-Sea to Sky

This was the closest of the five ridings in 2024, and may well be again tonight.

Two years ago, the Greens’ Jeremy Valeriote beat the Conservative candidate by just 2.6 percentage points, with the NDP in third place.

Article content

This time Valeriote, an environmental consultant, is trying to defend his seat against three new rivals: the Conservatives’ Ayla Dumais, an Indigenous political advisor from Squamish; the NDP’s Michelle Livaja, a union executive; and CentreBC’s Dan Wood, who works in real estate and housing.

West Vancouver has traditionally been a centre-right stronghold, but this riding had recent boundary changes that removed portions of the high-income-bracket city to make way for the faster-growing populations in the outdoorsy communities of Squamish, Whistler and Pemberton.

Article content

As a result, this diverse riding has slowly been changing its political stripes: Valeriorte lost by just 60 votes in a nail-biter in 2020, and pulled off the Green upset in 2024.

West Vancouver-Capilano

Article content

This riding, largely comprised of upper-middle-class neighbourhoods in West Vancouver and North Vancouver, was easily won by Conservative Lynne Block in 2024 with a nearly 20-percentage-point margin of victory.

Article content

The district is expected to remain blue, although its ballot looks very different in 2026.

Article content

Two years ago, the NDP’s Sara Eftekhar and popular independent Karin Kirkpatrick received 27 per cent and 20 per cent of the vote respectively, to Block’s 47 per cent.

But for this election, the Conservatives shunted Block to another riding, to allow star candidate Caroline Elliott, who placed second in the party’s leadership contest, to run in this safe seat.
