The office pulled over and tried to arrest the man but an altercation ensued while the individual was taken into custody.

After the man was taken to the Abbotsford Police detachment, he was found to have sustained a serious injury and was later transferred to hospital for treatment.

The IIOBC was then tapped to review the arrest. Following an investigation, IIOBC chief civilian director Jessica Berglund submitted a report to the B.C. Prosecution Service to recommend charges relating to the use of force.

Before charges can be approved, the BCPS must be “satisfied there is a substantial likelihood of conviction based on evidence gathered by the IIO.”
