Avatar: The Last Airbender Officially Finds New Avatar Set 225 Years in The Future

The Avatar: The Last Airbender franchise is officially jumping to the future with its upcoming spinoff series. The show, Avatar: Seven Havens, is reportedly set 225 years after The Legend of Korra and will follow a new Avatar named Pavi. The trailer released a month ago confirms the basic plot of the show, which will follow Pavi’s struggles as the new Avatar.

The creators of the show, Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko, have a proper justification for why the upcoming show is set so far in the future and why the new Avatar is an earthbender. The trailer also hinted at the present population being untrusting of Avatars, after their experiences with Korra.

Avatar Makers Reveal Why Seven Havens Had to Be Set in the Future

The decision to vault ahead to two centuries in the future was a narrative necessity for the Avatar: The Last Airbender franchise. Everything else before Seven Havens has been set around the same time, with explanations about how it was in the past. But the future of the franchise has always been in the dark and rife with potential.

Safe Havens asked the question: what would it be like if the world were more scattered than we realized and they no longer trusted the Avatar anymore? And what would happen if, in such a place, a young Avatar named Pavi entered the arena? 

A 225-year jump not only refreshes the setting, but it also forces an entirely new set of problems onto the world, ones the Four Nations framework was never built to answer. Co-creator Michael Dante DiMartino told Polygon,

This idea started with the setting and the desire to drop the viewer into a world that had experienced a cataclysmic event. Then we threw around ideas for what kind of Avatar would make the most sense in this world…We thought it would be interesting to place this kind-hearted character into a world that was not only on the brink of collapse, but whose citizens reviled the Avatar.

The makers also mentioned that the show would be more of a mystery, and the viewers would have to wait in suspense to understand what exactly happened to this world and how Korra is the cause of it all. With a new animation style and a new timeline to explore, Seven Havens is definitely one of the most anticipated shows of the year.

How Does The Legend of Korra Tie into Seven Havens?

The point of reference for the new Avatar: The Last Airbender series, Safe Havens, is from The Legend of Korra. The main character, Pavi, is the next Avatar after Korra, and the trailers hint that the previous Avatar did something so diabolical that the world no longer trusts Avatars.

The bridge between Korra’s world and this shattered future runs directly through one of The Legend of Korra‘s most significant plot developments: the opening of the spirit portals. At the end of The Legend of Korra, the Spirit World and the human realm were connected through the North, South, and Republic City spirit portals. It seemed like a happy ending at the time.

Seven Havens reveals just how fragile that peace really was. Since Korra’s era, the Spirit World and the physical world have collided entirely, ending civilization. The remnants of humanity are now forced to survive in a world overrun by malicious spirits and desperate human survivors.

As the show takes us into Ellora, a sprawling Haven with a million residents (according to the showrunners), we will learn more about how Korra’s actions have devastated this version of the Avatar world.
