A long period of heavy rain and strong winds are expected to hit Metro Vancouver and the B.C. south coast this weekend.

A special weather statement issued by Environment Canada Wednesday afternoon calls for an atmospheric river accompanied by high winds for Metro Vancouver, the Fraser Valley, Howe Sound, Whistler, the Sunshine Coast and Vancouver Island.

The rain is expected to begin around noon Friday and continue through the weekend. Rain totalling 40 to 70 millimetres over the whole region and up to 100 mm along the coastal mountains is predicted. Western and inland parts of Vancouver Island could see rainfall amounts up to 200 mm.

On Saturday, southeast winds gusting to 80 km/h could hit areas of Vancouver Island, the Sunshine Coast and Metro Vancouver closest to the water.

Among storm-related hazards the weather agency warns about are water pooling on roads, swollen rivers and creeks, and an increased risk of washouts, rockfall and landslides. Power outages from tree damage are possible due to high winds.

The rain and wind are expected to ease on Sunday.

The coastal storm follows one of the season’s first big atmospheric rivers that hit the north and central coasts earlier this week that led to rainfall warnings and high streamflow advisories.
