Andrew Garfield was on a break from acting when he got a call from John Crowley to film We Live in Time. Garfield told Collider that he was focused on rest and reflection. He was trying to understand himself better during this personal break and figure out what actually mattered to him. Garfield shared that he wasn’t eager to return to acting yet.

It was during this time that the opportunity in the form of the film came by and Garfield shared that he was willing to work with the director again. Garfield’s debut was with Crowley in the British drama film Boy A. He also read the script and felt that it would fit in with his break. He shared with Collider:

I was in the middle of taking some time to myself. I wasn’t really eager to get back to work. I was kind of resting and reflecting on life, giving myself some space to figure out where I was, who I was, and what actually mattered to me. Then I’ve been willing to work with John again since Boy A, 16 years ago. I read the script, and I thought, ‘This might fit in with my break.’ In a way, it would feel like the continuation of my break.

Garfield felt that the film could become part of his ongoing healing process. He shared that the film allowed him to explore the themes of love, loss, and the cost of living life to its fullest. Garfield became a little philosophical when explaining why he thought love and loss were inseparable. He shared that the film acted as a vessel for him to engage with these meaningful and joyful emotions. He shared:

This feels in the flow of where I’m at. It actually feels like it might be a part of the healing of whatever I was going through, and it was. It absolutely was. It was joyful. It was a vehicle and a vessel where I could explore loss and love, and the cost of living life to its fullest. The reality, the set-up that, if we love things, if we love people, if we love life, then baked into that is the loss of the very things we love. There’s no way around it, so let’s celebrate.

Garfield and Florence Pugh soon met on a Zoom meeting set up by Crowley. They barely knew each other during the call and only had two weeks of rehearsal before they started filming. Yet, they managed to bring unparalleled chemistry between their characters in the film.

Both Andrew Garfield and Florence Pugh felt really comfortable with each other while filming We Live In Time. They both attributed it to the trust they had developed for each other during that time. Pugh shared that they could “dance together” in the scenes. She shared that the film had some of the hardest scenes but it was wonderful to film as she felt safe with Garfield. The Black Widow actress shared with Collider:

I was totally relying on us to do this thing. We would dance together. Whatever he did, I would receive, and whatever I did, he would take. I was so excited to not know but also believe that I trusted him. That’s what was so alive about this experience. I enjoyed some of the hardest scenes I’ve ever had to do because it was so wonderful to work with someone that I felt so safe with, and I was so inspired by in the moment.

Garfield, too, agreed with Pugh that the trust between them played a big part in the film. He shared that they often didn’t know what to say or were in a different part of the room from the script, but it didn’t stop the flow of the film. He also appreciated John Crowley for allowing the flow state to continue.

We Live In Time hit theaters on October 11, 2024.
