The singer’s mother marked the 15th anniversary of her tragic death with some intense confessions about her life in front of the camera and on some of the world’s biggest stages, belting out tunes.

Janis Winehouse noted that the pressures of such a rich talent and expansive career eventually made the singer a victim of a life many people envied from a distance. “She was a victim of her own success. She didn’t want it, but it just followed her. And she’d be like, ‘Who, me?'” the singer’s mother declared.

She continued that her daughter had never felt comfortable with the level of fame she had amassed across the globe, but it came at a very overwhelming cost. Amy’s battle with self-confidence also played a role in the downward spiral she experienced, and she looked towards alcohol for solace.

Janis added that addiction may be difficult to understand for anyone not battling with it because of the complexities involved. She explained to iNews that once anyone gets hooked, the toxic dependence on harmful substances takes control, making it nearly impossible to part ways with such a lifestyle.

For a mother, nothing stays the same after losing a dear daughter; not even Janis has been able to get past the grief of mourning Amy. However, moving on with life and channeling her pain into something noteworthy, which Amy would be proud of, made everything worth it.

Janis revealed that her resilience is an ode to Amy’s lifestyle and resolve to keep going despite the travails of life. In the years since Amy’s death, Janis and the rest of the singer’s family have turned their grief into purpose by co-founding the Amy Winehouse Foundation. 

The charity focuses on providing support for children and young adults by boosting their confidence. The foundation also operates Amy’s Place, a London recovery home for women overcoming addiction.

Jane Winehouse, Amy’s stepmother, explained that the family created the foundation in the spirit of birthing something so pivotal from a nerve-wracking situation.

She is convinced the late singer would be smiling down from heaven because of the foundation’s impact, which projects Amy’s empathetic nature and also helps people with a substance use disorder find genuine recovery.

Four years after her death, the trailer for the “AMY” dhttps://people.com/all-about-amy-winehouse-parents-8634936ocumentary directed by BAFTA-winning filmmaker Asif Kapadia resurfaced. The project featured previously unseen home videos, unheard recordings, and intimate moments from Winehouse’s rise to stardom.

As shared by VOA News, in the documentary, the late singer was captured expressing her fears that would later prove heartbreakingly prophetic. The six-time Grammy winner admitted in a confessional that she never believed she could cope with the demands of a celebrity lifestyle.

“I don’t think I’m going to be at all famous; I don’t think I could handle it. I would probably go mad,” Amy declared, as a clip of a younger version of her portrayed her singing, laughing, and reflecting on her dreams while “Back to Black” plays in the background.

The singer also revealed she never expected music to become her career, explaining that she saw singing as something she could always fall back on if she chose.

In another interview from an MTV Summercamp festival in 2004, Amy was seen confidently telling the camera that she was not a star, nor was she famous anywhere in the world, making it easy for her to walk out on the street.

Perhaps Amy’s preference for the less famous life stemmed from her parents’ relatable background, with her dad, Mitch, a former cab driver and a singer, and her mom, Janis, a pharmacist.

The parents, in their interview with PEOPLE in 2023, confessed that they were the first witnesses to Amy’s talent, which became apparent from an early age.

Mitch and Janis got married in 1976, after which they welcomed their first child, Alex, in 1980 and Amy in 1983. According to her father in the interview, all they cared about now that she is gone is letting the world know the real her and the generous, loyal personality buried beneath such a complicated public image.

In her lowest moments of publicly battling alcohol and drug addiction alongside eating disorders, Amy’s parents remained her source of unadulterated support.

Following the singer’s passing, Mitch revealed that Amy had overcome her drug addiction and had gone several weeks without drinking. He recalled her being happier than she had been in years, making her sudden death even more heartbreaking.

Court Ruled Against Amy Winehouse’s Father in Dispute Over Singer’s Belongings

As shared by The Blast in April, Mitch lost a crucial legal battle where he accused the late singer’s close friends of mishandling more than $1 million worth of her clothing.

The singer’s dad, who also managed her estate, insisted in his filing that he sued Naomi Parry and Catriona Gourlay over wardrobe auctions held in 2021 and 2023, claiming they did so without his approval.

However, the pair maintained the clothing either belonged to them or had been gifted to them by Amy before she died in 2011, including the dress she wore during her final concert in Serbia.

Judge Sarah Clarke dismissed the lawsuit, noting that Mitch had been aware of the 2021 auction and even sought to redirect 70% of the proceeds to Amy’s estate instead of the Amy Winehouse Foundation. 

The judge also noted that Mitch seemed to be hoping to have others do his bidding. Court documents further alleged that Mitch offered Parry $250,000 in exchange for the auction proceeds, telling her it would help hide the tracks.

Parry reportedly declined the offer, stating that she would rather burn the money than give it away. Following Clark’s ruling, Parry expressed her relief to see that her name had been cleared following years of false and damaging allegations over her friendship with Amy.
