Naval warfare in Windrose is an incredibly rewarding but punishing experience. Beginners, especially, need to tread lightly during these gameplay hours and know that upgrading your vessel must be your top priority.
The game features three primary ship classes: the Ketch, the Brigantine, and the Frigate. Each of these classes comes in three distinct faction variations: Stock, Brethren, and Blackbeard.
We will help you dominate the seas by equipping you with knowledge of all ships. Not only that, but we will also give you recommendations on which ship is perfect for you at a particular level.
| Ketch | Free (Story Quest) | None | Early-game exploration and learning combat mechanics. |
| Brigantine | 1,000 Piastre | Level 2 (Brethren Of The Coast) | Mid-game fleet hunting and balanced naval warfare. |
| Frigate | 3,000 Piastre | Level 4 (Brethren Of The Coast) | Late-game domination and absorbing massive damage. |
1 The Ketch (3 Ships)
You will always remember your first ship | Credit: Windrose CrewThe Ketch is the very first proper sailing vessel you will command in the game. It’s a highly dependable and agile starter ship. The Ketch provides everything you need to survive the early encounters in the Coastal Jungle zone.
How to Unlock and Cost
You do not have to spend any hard-earned Piastres to acquire the blueprints for the Ketch. It’s unlocked for free simply by playing through the main storyline. You will have to complete the quest Need A Bigger Boat. This will allow you to construct your first Wharf.
Recommended Variant
Many players stick to the Stock variant for its balanced speed. However, we highly recommend the Brethren Ketch for absolute beginners. Combat is already tough in Windrose, and it’s a steep learning curve for naval combat.
While you sacrifice the speed for a massive HP of 65,000, we believe it’s worth it. The sheer survivability that this vessel grants while you get the hang of dodging cannons will have a great payoff later in the game.
| Stock Ketch | Build Wharf | 50,000 | 19kn | 3 x 12lb |
| Brethren Ketch | Build Wharf | 65,000 | 17kn | 3 x 12lb |
| Blackbeard Ketch | Build Wharf | 35,000 | 21kn | 3 x 12lb or 24lb |
2 The Brigantine (3 Ships)
The Brig is loved by many players | Credit: Windrose CrewThe Brigantine is the definitive mid-game powerhouse. It features double the cannon capacity of the Ketch! The Brig is tailor-made for aggressive captains who want to actively hunt down rival factions.
How to Unlock and Cost
Upgrading to the Brigantine requires a serious investment. You will have to purchase the ship designs from the Brethren Of The Coast faction provisioner for 1,000 Piastre. Keep in mind, you can’t even purchase the blueprints till you grind your Brethren Reputation to Level 2.
Recommended Variant
Many aggressive players flock to the Blackbeard Brig for its 24-pounder cannons. However, the Stock Brig is arguably the smartest investment. Remember, this is your mid-game workhorse and will face a wide variety of unpredictable encounters.
The Stock Brig provides a reliable middle ground with a solid 20kn top speed and 70,000 HP. It ensures you are never caught out of position or easily sunk by a surprise broadside.
| Stock Brig | Brethren Provisioner (Level 2) | 70,000 | 20kn | 6 x 12lb |
| Brethren Brig | Brethren Provisioner (Level 2) | 90,000 | 18kn | 6 x 12lb |
| Blackbeard Brig | Brethren Provisioner (Level 2) | 50,000 | 22kn | 6 x 12lb or 24lb |
3 The Frigate (3 Ships)
The Frigate is the ultimate end-game monster vessel, for now! | Credit: Windrose CrewThe Frigate is currently the undisputed king of the ocean in Windrose. This massive, late-game warship is a floating fortress! It boasts an astronomical amount of hull integrity and an overwhelming 12 cannon slots designed to level entire enemy fleets.
How to Unlock & Cost:
Acquiring the Frigate is the ultimate endgame grind. Like the Brig, you will have to purchase the blueprints from Brethren Of The Coast, but for thrice the amount of the Bring. The Frigate costs a staggering 3,000 Piastre. Additionally, you have to max out your Reputation to Level 4.
Recommended Variant
For the ultimate late-game experience, we heavily recommend building the Brethren Frigate. While the Blackbeard variant’s 36-pounder cannons might tempt you, the Brethren offers a jaw-dropping 200,000 HP.
Remember, Frigates are already massive targets that cannot easily dodge incoming fire. So, you need to lean into the ‘unkillable tank’ playstyle. This guarantees you can comfortably survive prolonged boss battles and multi-ship skirmishes.
| Stock Frigate | Brethren Provisioner (Level 4) | 160,000 | 18kn | 12 x 24lb |
| Brethren Frigate | Brethren Provisioner (Level 4) | 200,000 | 16kn | 12 x 24lb |
| Blackbeard Frigate | Brethren Provisioner (Level 4) | 110,000 | 20kn | 12 x 24lb or 36lb |
Do I have to buy all three variants of a ship?
No, you do not need to construct every single variation. Once you unlock the baseline blueprints for a ship class (like the Brigantine), you can choose to build whichever specific faction variant best suits your personal combat playstyle at your Wharf.
What is the core difference between the Brethren and Blackbeard variants?
Across all ship classes, the Brethren variants prioritize maximum hull health at the cost of top speed. Conversely, the Blackbeard variants feature the lowest health pools but boast the highest speeds and the unique ability to equip heavier, high-caliber cannons.
Will the developers add more ships to Windrose?
While there are currently three main classes, ongoing rumors and teases from the development roadmap suggest that a massive Galleon-class ship will be introduced in a future update.
