Income during the campaign comes from a small nightly wage plus a cut of store revenue whenever the player clears that night’s quota, and every dollar earned goes toward covering that final bill.

True Ending

If a player manages to hit that savings target on their own by Night 13, they land on the True Ending. It’s the version of the story where nobody loses anything: the pet pulls through, and Sheriff Clyde, one of the few friendly faces in the game, sticks around for good.

Reaching this outcome usually means playing the store side of the game well, keeping shelves stocked, and doppelgangers correctly flagged instead of accidentally harming an innocent shopper, since mistakes like that eat into a shift’s earnings.

Grave Decision Ending

Falling short of enough cash opens up different endings. Players who come up short get a message suggesting they bring Sheriff Clyde in for help. Accepting that offer means the surgery gets paid for by a mystery person, but the ending closes with Clyde’s funeral. The implication is that the player’s decision to involve him ultimately gets him killed, even though it’s never shown directly.

Empty Home Ending

You unlock this one when you refuse to call for help, and the game decides to deliver its worst outcome. Without the money and without Clyde getting involved, the surgery never happens, and the story ends with the player alone in their apartment.

The Doppelganger Twist in Shift at Midnight

None of these three endings fully explains who or what is behind the killings the player spends 13 nights investigating. The game’s central threat, a faceless figure often nicknamed the Dentist by the community, doesn’t behave like the other doppelgangers players are trained to spot throughout the campaign. It’s entirely invisible to the store’s ID scanner, and on the final night, it’s shown carrying Sheriff Clyde’s identification card.

That detail points towards a family connection between Clyde and the town’s former mayor, who many players believe was secretly responsible for a string of killings years earlier while maintaining a friendly public image. The theory goes that his guilt eventually drove him to take his own life, but because the game’s doppelgangers appear to be manifestations of extreme negative emotion rather than literal shapeshifters, his darkest secret didn’t stay buried.

Instead, it resurfaced as the most powerful doppelganger in the game, one that specifically targets his own bloodline.
