What Is A Colt Is My Passport About?
A Colt Is My Passport (1967) | Credits: NikkatsuThe upcoming film is expected to be a reinterpretation of the 1967 Japanese noir classic, which follows a stoic hitman navigating betrayal, survival, and shifting alliances after a job goes wrong.
As Deadline reports, the reimagining of the film will be set in 1978 Detroit. This time, it will follow a Vietnam veteran turned into a contract killer, called Colt, who is now forced to hide after he assassinated a gangland boss.
The script is written by Chris Webb and produced by Ed Talfan for Severn Screen, while Evans produces for One More One Productions.
Interestingly, Evans revealed what made him fall for the 1967 film (via Deadline):
From the moment I first saw Takashi Nomura’s wildly influential A Colt Is My Passport, I fell in love with its bold fusion of genres. Merging film noir and spaghetti western tropes together in an irresistible way I knew immediately I wanted to take on the challenge of making this my next feature. More a reimagining than a remake, Chris Webb’s remarkable, noir-drenched script has taken the original film’s core themes and built upon them gifting the story’s iconic characters more emotional weight while retaining its deep rooted genre influences.
We can expect the film to retain the original film’s cool aesthetics, but possibly infused with kinetic fight choreography that made The Raid a global phenomenon.
Is There A Trailer for A Colt Is My Passport?
Gareth Evans | Credits: YouTube / The UpcomingAs of April 2026, a public trailer has not been released online. However, an exclusive “first look” was screened for industry insiders at CinemaCon in mid-April.
The trailer reportedly features Ṣọpẹ́ Dìrísù’s hitman in 1970s Detroit, murdering a man at point-blank range. But his boss, instead of paying him, sends other hitmen after him. Several of the scenes are also in black and white, with several scenes featuring bullets being fired and some frenetic action scenes.
While the film is still in development, we can expect the trailer to be released by the end of this year.
When will A Colt Is My Passport release?
No official release date has been announced yet by Amazon MGM Studios and Orion Pictures, but production wrapped in South Wales late 2025, with a likely 2027 theatrical premiere.

Ṣọpẹ́ Dìrísù leads as the hitman Colt, joined by Tim Roth, Jack Reynor, Lucy Boynton, Victor Alli, Ewan Mitchell (House of the Dragon), Burn Gorman, Noah Taylor, Charlie Ellerton, and Donald Sage Mackay in undisclosed roles.
What’s A Colt Is My Passport about?
Gareth Evans reimagines the 1967 Japanese noir as a 1978 Detroit-set neo-noir starring a Vietnam vet contract killer who becomes hunted by his employers after assassinating a gangland boss, blending betrayal, survival, and shifting alliances.
What’s different from the 1967 original?
Evans’ version relocates to gritty 1970s Detroit (vs. Japan), emphasizes emotional weight for iconic characters, and infuses his kinetic action style while retaining cool noir aesthetics and genre-blending tension.
