Video Game remakes and remasters give developers an opportunity to introduce beloved classics to a new generation, but not every release lives up to its predecessor. Some arrive with technical problems, and a few lose the atmosphere that made the original game special.
Here are seven of the worst game remakes and remasters that failed to preserve the magic of their original releases, ranked from the least disappointing to the most damaging.
7 XIII
XIII | Credit: PlayMagic The original XIII, released in 2003, stood out with its comic-book-inspired visuals and the stylish first-person shooting. Unfortunately, the 2020 remake struggled to deliver the same experience.
The updated graphics in the remake were criticized for completely redoing what made the visuals special in the first place, as it abandoned the signature cel-shaded art style in favor of a more generic look. There were also technical problems that affected the gameplay, including glitches, inconsistent audio, and visual errors that made the experience feel unfinished.
The original remains a great example of comic-book storytelling in video games. However, the remake’s biggest mistake was failing to match that creative vision with reliable execution.
6 Silent Hill HD Collection

The Silent Hill HD collection attempted to bring both games to newer hardware, but its technical shortcomings severely compromised the very atmosphere that made the games work in the first place.
The collection changed the fog, lightning, and textures, which affected the original game’s carefully constructed environments; in a series where limited visibility is central to the horror, reducing the fog could expose unfinished-looking scenery and weaken the sense of isolation. Not to forget the performance issues and the inconsistencies in its presentation.
5 Crysis Remastered

However, Crysis Remastered did not consistently preserve the qualities that made the original so impressive. It made changes to the textures and the environmental presentation, which produced mixed results, while technical issues further affected the experience on certain platforms. Some players also preferred the PC version’s visual character and the modding flexibility it provided.
4 Assassin’s Creed The Ezio Collection

The collection improved the resolution of the game for sure, but it offered relatively limited enhancements beyond bringing the older games to newer consoles. The visual inconsistencies and technical limitations remained, while the absence of substantial gameplay improvements made the package feel conservative.
Unlike some entries on this list, The Ezio Collection is not a complete failure. Its campaigns remain entertaining, and the convenience of having three major adventures together is valuable.
3 Warcraft III: Reforged
Warcraft III: Reforged | Credit: Blizzard Warcraft III helped establish the foundations of modern real-time strategy games, combining resource management and tactical battles with memorable storytelling. Building further on this, its 2020 remaster, Warcraft III: Reforged, promised updated visuals and a refreshed experience.
Unfortunately, its launch was marred by bugs, missing features, and disappointment over changes to how the game was presented, including how the upgraded models did not always capture the original game’s distinctive character, and important online features were unavailable or even altered at launch.
What further frustrated the players was how the release for this one was integrated with the existing game, so those who wanted to retain the original experience simply couldn’t.
2 Life is Strange Remastered Collection
Life is Strange Remastered Collection | Credit: Square Enix Life is Strange builds its reputation on emotional storytelling, and its remastered version aimed to improve character models and animation while preserving the original narrative.
However, the visual updates produced mixed results, with facial expressions and animations sometimes appearing awkward, further weakening scenes that depended on subtle emotional performances. Technical inconsistencies in the remastered collection also distracted from the experience, particularly during conversations and dramatic moments.
The story itself remains compelling, and the remaster does offer improvements in certain areas. Yet its presentation changes do not consistently enhance the original, making it a tough recommendation as a replacement for the earlier release.
1 Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition

Simply put, these open-world games deserved modern games that respected their distinct identities.
Instead, the collection launched with numerous bugs and character models that often looked noticeably different from their original counterparts, not to mention the inconsistent lighting and the problematic rain effects.
The collection did introduce useful features, including modernised controls and additional convenience options. Nevertheless, these improvements struggle to compensate for the technical problems and inconsistent art direction. Subsequent updates did address some issues, but the launch left a lasting impression of a remaster that promised more than it could deliver.
