7 The Equalizer

Harbour plays corrupt detective Masters in Antoine Fuqua’s The Equalizer, and while Denzel Washington owns the joint, Harbour slips comfortably into its grimy criminal world. He is more slimeball than bruiser here, which makes this an entertaining change of pace. The movie has 61% on Rotten Tomatoes.

6 Gran Turismo

Gran Turismo gives Harbour one of his better grumpy-mentor gigs as Jack Salter, a failed racer tasked with turning gamer Jann Mardenborough into the real deal. The film can get shamelessly inspirational, but Harbour’s permanently fed-up energy stops the sugar rush from getting out of hand. Rotten Tomatoes has it at 65% from critics and 98% from audiences.

5 We Have a Ghost

Harbour barely talks as Ernest, the ghost haunting a family’s new home, yet he somehow turns confused looks and clumsy gestures into the movie’s best ammunition. We Have a Ghost is messy, sitting at 44% on Rotten Tomatoes, but its paranormal comedy scratches the same ‘ridiculous premise played surprisingly straight’ itch that makes Violent Night fun. Netflix currently has it available to stream.

4 Black Widow

If Santa’s blend of tough-guy bravado and accidental comedy is your bag, meet Alexei Shostakov. Harbour’s Red Guardian charges into Black Widow like a bloke who has spent decades rehearsing stories about how hard he used to be. Florence Pugh gets the sharper material, but Harbour turns Alexei into an immensely lovable headache. The Marvel film holds 79% on Rotten Tomatoes and streams on Disney+.

3 Thunderbolts*

Thunderbolts finally gives Red Guardian more to chew on than Soviet bragging rights. Harbour keeps Alexei loud and shameless, but there is actual tenderness beneath the buffoonery this time, especially around Yelena. That extra mileage makes his performance hit harder than it did on Black Widow. With 88% from critics and 93% from verified audiences on Rotten Tomatoes, this is also one of Harbour’s best-reviewed blockbusters. It currently streams on Disney+.

2 Hellboy

The 2019 Hellboy reboot got absolutely clobbered by critics, earning a savage 17% Rotten Tomatoes score. And yet, Harbour himself? Good casting. He brings the horns, attitude, bar-fight swagger, and enormous ‘please stop talking before I punch something’ energy. The movie around him is all over the shop, but anyone waiting for Violent Night 2 specifically to watch Harbour batter monsters could do considerably worse.

Yeah, no clever upset here. The original Violent Night remains mandatory viewing before the sequel because Harbour’s Santa already contains his entire action-star toolkit: exhaustion, rage, tenderness, gallows humor, and a disturbing aptitude with a sledgehammer. The movie earned 74% from critics and 88% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes. More importantly, Harbour sells a premise that could have become bargain-bin nonsense within ten minutes.
