In Black Clover, having powerful magic is one thing, but knowing what to do when a fight goes wrong is a completely different skill. The Spade Kingdom raid has already shown how clever strategies, creative spells, and scientific experiments can turn the tide of a battle.
Now, based on the first four episodes of Black Clover Season 2, we have picked six characters who stand out for their magical knowledge, battle IQ, and ability to think under pressure. The ranking considers their demonstrated feats in Season 2 rather than simply rewarding the characters with the greatest power.
6 Jack the Ripper Keeps Adapting His Slashes to Beat Tough Defenses
Jack the Ripper from Black Clover Season 2. | Credit: Studio PierrotJack the Ripper is hardly the most patient captain in the Clover Kingdom, but there’s a good reason Dante takes him seriously. In Episode 2 of Black Clover Season 2, Jack struggles against Dante’s Gravity Magic, which makes landing a clean hit incredibly difficult. Rather than keep throwing the same attacks at him, Jack changes his cutting magic until he develops slashes capable of cutting through gravity itself. He eventually wounds Dante, who cannot immediately regenerate the damage.
That’s an impressive display of combat intelligence. However, Jack tends to learn by fighting rather than thinking several moves ahead, and that makes his style risky against enemies who can finish him before he adapts. Still, his ability to turn a seemingly impossible matchup into an opportunity earns him sixth place.
5 Asta’s Battle IQ Makes Up for His Lack of Magic
Asta presents an interesting case because, technically, he isn’t a mage in the traditional sense. He was born without magic, but he is a Magic Knight, and his ability to use Anti-Magic makes him impossible to ignore in a discussion about magical intelligence. In Season 2 Episode 3, Asta finally made his anime debut of Devil Union power. He then effortlessly handled Lilith and Nahamah using the same power in Episode 4 of Black Clover Season 2.
Asta’s biggest strength is his ability to react when a fight goes sideways. His biggest weakness, however, is that he often jumps into danger before thinking through the consequences. He relies heavily on instinct and makes plans on the go. That earns him fifth place: his battle IQ is remarkable, but his impulsiveness keeps him from ranking higher here.
4 Yuno Adapts His Wind Magic to Exploit Enemy Weaknesses
Yuno from Black Clover Season 2. | Credit: Studio PierrotYuno has no intention of letting his previous defeat by Zenon happen again. During the raid, he faces the opponent whose Bone Magic and Spatial Magic make approaching him a nightmare. Yuno responds by pushing his Spirit Magic further, using Spirit Dive and Spirit of Boreas to challenge Zenon’s defenses in Episode 2 of Black Clover Season 2.
What keeps Yuno at fourth is the difference between excellent execution and consistently inventive planning. His fight against Zenon proves that he can respond intelligently to a difficult opponent, even if his tactical creativity isn’t always the main reason he gains the upper hand.
3 Charlotte Roselei Turns Her Knowledge of Curses Into a Weapon
Charlotte Roselei from Black Clover Season 2. | Credit: Studio PierrotCharlotte has a personal reason to understand curses better than most mages. A curse once threatened to control her own life, forcing her to confront its effects firsthand. That experience becomes particularly useful when she faces Vanica in Episode 2 of Black Clover Season 2. Charlotte modifies her Briar Magic into an anti-curse spell. Her briars grow stronger against the devil’s curse, allowing her to trap Vanica.
This is one of the smartest magical adjustments shown during the opening raid. Charlotte doesn’t just hit harder; she changes how her magic works to target the specific threat in front of her. She takes third place because the other two on the list take planning to a whole new level.
2 Nacht Faust Plans His Moves Before His Enemies Can React
Nacht Faust from Black Clover Season 2. | Credit: Studio PierrotNacht’s greatest advantage is how much he understands about devils and their contracts. He knows that simply possessing Anti-Magic isn’t enough; Asta must learn to work with Liebe and control their combined power.
Episode 4 of Black Clover Season 2 also shows the limits of Nacht’s planning. Facing the supreme devils Lilith and Nahamah, he combines his devil forms and uses Monument of Atonement in a desperate attempt to seal them, accepting that the spell may cost him his life. Nacht ranks second because he combines preparation, magical knowledge, and tactical thinking at a higher level than others.
1 Morris Libardirt Uses Science to Push Magic Beyond Its Limits
Morris Libardirt from the anime Black Clover. | Credit: Studio PierrotMorris is dangerous because he doesn’t need to win a duel to change the course of a war. The former Diamond Kingdom scholar is working with the Spade Kingdom’s Dark Triad to accelerate the Tree of Qliphoth ritual. His research turns knowledge into a weapon with consequences far beyond a single battlefield.
That makes Morris the strongest choice for first place. His greatest weakness is that his plans depend on the ritual and the forces supporting it, but his ability to reshape the conflict through experimentation makes him the smartest character on this list so far.
