The 5.5-magnitude quake struck shortly before 10 p.m., about 181 kilometres southwest of Port Hardy, according to Earthquakes Canada.

There were reports of shaking as far away as Victoria but no reports of damage.

The last earthquake in the area was a week ago on Sunday, July 19 and was a magnitude 5.6 quake. It also struck under the ocean at a depth of 10 kilometres, about 219 kilometres southwest of Port Hardy.
