In the recent landscape, Isekai anime saturate the industry. There are just too many titles to pick from, and that can lead to confusion among the viewers. The Isekai genre also has a bad reputation because of that very fact, since there are simply too many anime with copy-pasted themes. However, every now and then, there comes an Isekai anime that destroys the competition.
Let’s rank the twenty Isekai anime. The basis of the ranking is simple: The uniqueness in the anime (because there are many copy pasted themes in the industry), and the overall quality of the show. Let’s dive in.
20 That Time I Got Reincarnated As a Slime
Rimuru from That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime | Credits: 8-bitRanking That Time I Got Reincarnated As a Slime at rank twenty may seem surprising at first, but it makes sense when we consider the criteria of uniqueness. While the anime is extremely unique in the sense of how the story plays out using politics, the problem lies in the power creep.
Rimuru is strong, but his primary skills ensure that no matter what problem arises, if it can’t be solved using brains, it can be solved using brawn.

19 Cautious Hero: The Hero Is Overpowered but Overly Cautious
Seiya from Cautious Hero | Credit: White FoxCautious Hero is a comedy Isekai anime that aired in 2019. While, as a comedy anime, it could’ve been considered in the top 10, as an Isekai anime, it isn’t as good as the ones further up the ranking. Seiya, just like Rimuru, is really strong, which does well for hype moments, but is not good for the story’s progression in terms of uniqueness.
However, the reason it is ranked above Tensura is that there are plot twists regarding the Isekai, which makes it slightly more unique and interesting.

18 The Wrong Way to Use Healing Magic
Usato from The Wrong Way to Use Healing Magic | Credit: Shin-Ei AnimationIn The Wrong Way to Use Healing Magic, the protagonist accidentally enters the teleportation circle, which was meant to transport two other students from his school instead of him. However, later it turns out that he has a latent talent for Healing Magic, which is considered quite rare in the fantasy world of this anime.
This anime does a good job at focusing on healers and their job on the battlefield, while the actual Heroes fight on the frontline. However, this anime suffers from a meandering plot line – nothing really happens throughout the season other than the protagonist training.
| TITLE | The Wrong Way to Use Healing Magic |
| RELEASE DATE | Jan 6, 2024 |
| STUDIO | Shin-Ei Animation |
| STREAMING | Amazon Prime, Apple TV, Crunchyroll |
| MAL RATING (as of April 13, 2026) | 7.53 / 10 |
17 GATE
Rory, Youji, Lalena, Tuka Luna, and Shino from GATE | Credit: A-1 PicturesGATE is one of those isekai anime where Isekai happens both ways and isn’t limited to just the protagonist. One day, a “gate” opens in the middle of Tokyo, and chaos ensues. That is one when a special forces officer takes it upon himself to save the citizens, and eventually becomes part of the military forces going inside the gate as well.
The reason this anime is ranked this low is that the anime relies too much on the “modern weaponry = strong” aspect of the show, rather than introducing unique situations that can’t be handled that easily.

16 Uncle from Another World
Ojisan from Uncle from Another World | Credit: Atelier PontdarcIn Uncle from Another World, the isekai story has already concluded. A Japanese man, who had his adventure in a fantasy world, has finally returned to Japan and is now living a normal life. However, he is still very strong. This is a comedy anime that relies a lot on the flashbacks of the uncle in another world.
While an amazing comedy anime that is totally worth watching, as an Isekai, it doesn’t have much going for it either.

| MAL RATING (as of April 13, 2026) | 7.75 / 10 |
15 Tsukimichi -Moonlit Fantasy-
Makoto from Tsukimichi | Credit: C2CIn Tsukimichi, the main character that is summoned by the goddess is not the Hero that is meant to save the world; instead, the goddess hates him because he is relatively ugly. However, slowly, the protagonist grows stronger and forms bonds with monsters instead of humans, as he is too ugly by human standards.
This is an amazing, cozy Isekai anime that sometimes takes dark turns; however, the concept is relatively simple. The entire plot relies on the protagonist growing strong; hence, the story rarely moves forward, while the protagonist keeps growing stronger.

| STUDIO | C2C |
| STREAMING | Crunchyroll, Hulu |
| MAL RATING (as of April 13, 2026) | 7.71 / 10 |
14 Sonny Boy
Nozomi from Sonny Boy | Credit: MadhouseThirty-Six students end up teleporting to a void-like place, along with the entire school building itself. As some students start attaining supernatural powers, the friction among the students grows. No matter how far they look, there is nothing in sight other than their school itself. Together, they must unravel the mystery of what is going on.
As a mystery thriller anime, this could’ve been in the top 5. That said, it is still an amazing anime that only ranks this low because the 13 anime above it are simply better.

13 Fate/Grand Order: Absolute Demonic Front – Babylonia
Gilgamesh from Fate/Grand Order: Absolute Demonic Front – Babylonia | Credit: CloverWorks“Isekai” is not a term that comes to mind when you look at any other Fate Franchise anime. However, Fate/Grand Order: Absolute Demonic Front – Babylonia is exactly that. Grails are a key component in the Fate universe (s), and when you insert them in differnet point in time, you get a singularity.
So, travelling to those singularities is a bit like traveling in time, except that the events there didn’t happen at all, making it an Isekai. In this particular Fate anime, the protagonists travel to B.C. 2655 Mesopotamia to fix the timeline. The reason this anime is ranked in the bottom half of this ranking is that it requires a deep understanding of Fate lore and doesn’t function well without it.

12 The Eminence in Shadow
Cid Kagenou from The Eminence in Shadow | Credit: NexusIn most Isekai anime, the protagonist is a random nobody in their original world. However, that is simply not the case in The Eminence in Shadow. Cid Kagenou (or Minoru in Japan) is a high school student who has wished to grow stronger ever since he was a child. The only difference between him and other people is that he didn’t give up on his unrealistic dreams.
He started operating as a vigilante and became strong enough to beat a special forces veteran all by himself. It is when he actually dies and is reborn in another world that he attains magic. Due to his experience in a previous life, he ends up becoming the strongest in another world.
This anime is ranked near the middle of this because it is really creative with the protagonist, who can be considered a psychopath himself, but at the same time, suffers from the same flaws, such as relying too much on hype moments.

| MAL RATING (as of April 13, 2026) | 8.22 / 10 |
11 Overlord
Ainz from Overlord | Credit: MadhouseIn Overlord, the isekai world is not another reality; it’s a video game world that became real. As a standalone anime, Overlord is simply amazing. However, transmigrating into a video game where you were already the strongest is a very overused trope that lacks creativity.
This anime could’ve broken into the top 10 if it also didn’t rely on a strong character whom we, as viewers, know will be victorious each time. Ainz is simply too strong. It suffers the same problem as Eminence in Shadow in that regard.
| TITLE | Overlord |
| RELEASE DATE | Jul 7, 2015 |
| STUDIO | Madhouse |

10 Ascendance of a Bookworm
Myne from Ascendance of a Bookworm | Credits: Ajia-doUrano is a normal girl who wishes to be a librarian so that she can read as many books as she wants; however, it is right before her dream is fulfilled that she is reborn in another world after dying. However, this new world is stuck in the past, and there are no books to be found in an average household.
This is a simple yet wholesome anime about Urano, as she decided that if there are no books to read, she will make them herself. However, as good as this anime is, the narrative progression is really slow.

9 Release That Witch
Roland from Release that Witch | Credit: ThundrayCheng Yan unexpectedly dies and finds himself in the body of Roland, who is the fourth prince of the Kingdom of Graycastle. He stops a witch hunt, only to realize that magic is real, and people are simply not seeing the potential of it.
He starts recruiting witches in a world where they are all hated, and starts improving the world a little by little. This anime is really unique in the aspect of its fantasy world, and visually, it is just as good as it sounds. The only reason this anime is not ranked even higher is that it is still airing as of April 13, 2026, and we don’t know if the quality will hold up.

8 The Boy and The Beast
Kumatetsu and Ren from The Boy and The Beast | Credit: Studio ChizuKyuta runs away from home and finds himself in the beast realm of Jutengai, becoming the apprentice of the deeply flawed warrior Kumatetsu. He begins his martial training, only to realize that true strength requires confronting the inherent darkness of the human world.
Most of this isekai anime movie was amazing; however, the only reason this film is not ranked even higher is its structural collapse in the third act, where it abandons its grounded character stakes for unearned, oversized melodrama.

7 Saga of Tanya The Evil
Tanya from Saga of Tanya the Evil | Credit: NutSaga of Tanya The Evil is yet another unique take on Isekai. The protagonist in this isekai was a rather well-off person in Japan; however, he didn’t treat his employees well at all. One day, in the heat of revenge, the employee he fired pushes him in front of an oncoming train, and he gets a chance to talk to “god” before actually dying.
However, even in that instant, he refuses to believe in that god. In return, the god transmigrates him into the body of a young girl living in poverty, in a fictional European Nation during World War 1. The twist here is that WW2 tech is combined with Magic. The quality of this anime holds up well, with a protagonist who is fundamentally evil (something we rarely get to see).

6 So I’m a Spider, So What?
Kumoko from So I’m a Spider, So What? | Credit: MillepenseeA whole class being isekaid is a common trope in this genre. However, the protagonist of this anime is a girl who teleports into the body of a just-hatched spider monster deep in a dungeon, while her classmates are living a good life in a magic academy.
This anime is all about her survival, as she spends every day protecting herself from being hunted and hunting those weaker than her to grow stronger. The anime relies on the anticipation of Kumoko (the protagonist) leaving the dungeon a lot, and even though it focuses mostly on moslty just her monologues, the anime is really entertaining.
The reason this anime couldn’t break into the top 5 is that, other than Kumoko, all other characters have terrible writing.
| TITLE | So I’m a Spider, So What? |

| STUDIO | Millepensee |

| MAL RATING (as of April 13, 2026) | 7.45 / 10 |
5 No Game No Life
Sora and Shiro from No Game No Life | Credit: MadhouseIn No Game No Life, Sora and Shiro are two siblings who are considered legends in the gaming world; however, as much as they are revered in the online communities, they are really socially inept. Their NEET behaviour doesn’t result from an actual fear of society as much as it results from their hatred for it.
One day, they teleport into another world, “Disboard,” after defeating the god of games in chess. Disboard is a world where everything is settled by playing games; hence, they fit perfectly there. It doesn’t take them long before they rule a nation itself.
The uniqueness of this anime lies in the defined rules of the isekai world. The protagonists are both human, but they use their smart nature in a world full of magic to get by.

4 Konosuba
Megumin from Konosuba | Credit: Studio DeenKonosuba is yet another comedy isekai anime. While this anime follows the generic plot of dying, teleporting, and then going on an adventure to defeat the demon king, things simply keep getting out of hand.
However, it turns out that living in such a world is far different from how it plays out in a game-like story. Instead of going on a thrilling adventure, the protagonist must first work to pay for their living expenses. Unlike the previous comedy isekai anime in this ranking, Konosuba does an amazing job at world-building as well, justifying its high ranking.
| TITLE | Konosuba |
| RELEASE DATE | Jan 14, 2016 |

3 Re:ZERO – Starting Life in Another World –
Subaru and others from Re:ZERO | Credit: White FoxRe:ZERO starts off as just another isekai anime. The protagonist is teleported to another world that seems to be perfect for him. However, it doesn’t take long before the anime completely flips its tone. It turns out that the only power the protagonist is blessed with is returning in time by death, and he cannot defend against any threat on his own, especially when he is tangled in an assassination scheme.
The anime is well known for taking dark turns, and goes in complete different direction from most isekai anime that rely on specific moments to generate hype. This anime is full of amazing world-building as well.

2 Mushoku Tensei – Jobless Reincarnation
Rudeus from Mushoku Tensei | Credit: Studio BindWhat the isekai genre signifies is the concept of “second chance”, and no anime does it better than Mushoku Tensei. So far, all the protagonists we have seen were pretty normal in their original world. In fact, even Sora and Shiro from No Game No Life had something going on in life for them. However, Rudeus was the textbook example of NEET (not in education or training).
He became a NEET in high school, and didn’t leave his house until he was thrown out in his middle age. He was thrown out because the last line he crossed was skipping his own parents’ funeral. The last thing he did was save a few high school students from an oncoming truck, but he ended up dying and being reborn in a fantasy world instead.
This anime is about Rudeus overcoming his trauma from his past life, owning up to the horrible stuff he did, and simply trying to live properly as a good person in a new life. The world-building of this anime, or the magic system, is not that impressive, but it takes the concept of Isekai and realizes it better than any other anime. As far as isekai goes, it is easily among the big three.

1 Lord of Mysteries
Lord of Mysteries is an isekai anime based on a highly popular web novel Lord of the Mysteries. The story follows Zhou Mingrui, who performs a luck enhancement ritual that was supposed to be nothing more than a superstition, but he ends up transmigrating into the body of Klein Moretti’s dead body. That’s right, when he wakes up in his new body, the original Klein had pulled the trigger on himself.
The reason this anime sits at the top is that it does an amazing job at creating a unique world, a unique isekai concept, and a unique character as well. The animations of this anime are just as good as the story. As far as the power system goes, unlike most anime in this ranking, the power system of this anime works on strict, predefined rules that feel game-like at first glance, but are a direct result of that world’s progress.
The world itself is unique because while most anime in this ranking rely on the dark fantasy or light fantasy trope through storytelling, in Lord of Mysteries, the world itself is cruel. The narrative successfully integrates Lovecraftian cosmic horror with Victorian socio-economic structures. This anime even managed to rival One Piece during its run.

What qualifies as an Isekai anime?
In Isekai anime, the theme centers around one or more characters traveling to another world. This traversal can happen either by dying, teleporting, or simply transmigrating.
What is the difference between Isekai anime and normal fantasy anime?
In fantasy anime, story takes place in a world that is “native” to the characters. However, that is not the case in Isekai. In Isekai anime, characters are in a different world from their original world.
What is “Truck-kun”?
Truck-kun is a community-driven meme referring to the ubiquitous white transport truck that appears in the first episode of many isekai series to hit (and kill) the protagonist. It is the most common “plot device” used to send a character to another world.
Among the ranking, which Isekai anime is your favorite? Let us know in the comments.
