Cineverse announced that RetroCrush has acquired a package of VIZ Media anime, with Ninja Clash in the Land of Snow among the films coming to the service. For longtime Naruto viewers, the addition offers a chance to revisit the franchise’s first theatrical movie in a new streaming environment.

Directed by Tensai Okamura and produced by Studio Pierrot, the movie premiered in Japan on August 21, 2004. It arrived during the original anime’s run and is generally placed between Episodes 101 and 102, preserving the feel of early Naruto before the story’s power scale and mythology expanded considerably.

The story begins with Team 7 receiving what sounds like a straightforward assignment. Kakashi leads Naruto, Sasuke and Sakura in protecting Yukie Fujikaze, a popular actress filming The Adventures of Princess Gale. Their journey takes them to the Land of Snow, where the actress’s connection to the region soon becomes impossible to ignore. Yukie is actually Koyuki Kazahana, the kingdom’s missing princess. Her return puts her in the sights of Doto Kazahana, the man who seized control of the Land of Snow. What starts as an escort mission consequently becomes a struggle to reclaim her homeland.

The film earned approximately $11.17 million worldwide, according to Box Office Mojo, with more than $11 million of that coming from Japan. That figure represents box-office revenue, not the movie’s production budget. It also opened at No. 1 in Japan’s weekend box office, making its theatrical debut a notable early milestone for the growing franchise.
