The heptapods, nicknamed Abbott and Costello, communicate through intricate circular symbols, and the process of deciphering their language becomes the movie’s real action sequence.

The film’s greatest trick, of course, is its treatment of time. Louise’s seemingly fragmented memories are eventually revealed to be glimpses of her future, completely changing the meaning of what we have watched.

The revelation works because Villeneuve has carefully planted visual and emotional clues throughout the story. More importantly, it gives the film’s central question a deeply personal edge: if you knew the pain waiting for you, would you still choose to experience the happiness that comes before it?

Arrival is getting a special 10th-anniversary treatment, with Paramount set to release the acclaimed sci-fi drama as a limited-edition 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray Steelbook on September 8, 2026. It’s a fitting way to revisit a movie that has only grown in reputation since its 2016 release, especially for fans who consider it one of Villeneuve’s finest works.

Villeneuve has always had a particularly personal connection to Arrival. In an interview with Santa Barbara Independent, he explained just how important the film was to him:

Arrival opened the windows of a room — my soul — that was seriously starting to lack oxygen. It was a lifeline in my creative life. I had been dealing with dark subjects for over 10 years and was in dire need of light.

This makes Arrival feel even more intimate, not just as another film in his impressive career, but as a project that arrived at exactly the right moment for him creatively. Indeed, this anniversary release is a great excuse for fans to experience it all over again.
