Gamers Praise Xbox As Disc-to-Digital Feature Lets Players Digitize Delisted Games

Xbox has given physical game owners a reason to dig through their shelves again. Its new Disc-to-Digital feature, revealed on August 26, is now being tested by Insiders, and early reports show that some games no longer available to buy digitally can still be converted into digital licenses using their physical discs.

That discovery has quickly become one of the most talked-about parts of the feature. From Activision’s 2013 Deadpool game to other delisted and physical-only releases, gamers are now testing their collections to see what works, while a growing community list works to track the results. Not every game is eligible, but the ones that are working are giving some long-unavailable titles a rather unexpected second life.

Xbox’s Disc-to-Digital Feature Is Resurrecting Delisted Games

The biggest surprise so far is that a game does not necessarily have to be available on the Xbox Store for its physical disc to receive a digital license. That is exactly what happened with the 2013 Deadpool game, which has been delisted for years but still converted successfully when an Insider tested its disc:

The early testing is also showing that this is not limited to one or two obvious examples. People are deliberately going through older collections, including games that were never available digitally in certain circumstances, to see which discs the system recognizes. The results are already producing some unexpected successes alongside plenty of exceptions:

That testing has effectively turned into a community-driven compatibility check. Some discs receive the digital license immediately, while others return an error or are listed as not participating. With Xbox yet to provide a complete public list of every supported game, these early reports are becoming a useful way to see where the feature’s current boundaries actually sit.

The Community Is Already Tracking Which Discs Work

Xbox has not given Insiders a complete list of supported games, so the community is figuring it out the old-fashioned way: by trying their discs and comparing notes. XCT.live’s Disc2Digital database has started collecting those results in one place.

Games are being marked according to whether the conversion worked, failed, or showed that the title is not participating. That makes it easier to see which games have actually been tested instead of relying on people assuming that a delisted game should work just because another one did.

The list is already turning up some oddities. Certain delisted games work, while other titles from the same publishers can fail, and some physical releases simply refuse the digital license. That is also why these results should not be treated as Xbox’s final compatibility list. The feature only entered Insider testing on August 31 (via Xbox Wire), and the database is changing as more and more people test their collections and (manually) contribute to the list.

For anyone with a pile of Xbox discs gathering dust, you can check the database before digging through your collection, and if your game is missing, there is now a very good reason to put that disc into the console and see what happens!
