10 One Piece Villain Entrances That Gave Us Chills, Ranked

1 week ago 16

Compared to every other shonen anime title out there, the villains from One Piece are among the most impactful that have largely impacted the story. From setting the tone for a hero narrative to uncovering lore that revealed the depths of the series, the hero story of Eiichiro Oda’s series is definitely incomplete without the villains.

That being said, some of them really made their presence feel underwhelming and just carried on with the flow of the story, but a handful of them gave us the chills from the very moment they entered the series. Here are some of the One Piece villains whose entrances gave us the chill more than we could have imagined, ranked by intensity.

10 Buggy – The Comic Villain of One Piece Who Deceived Us All at First

As one of the first antagonists of the One Piece series, Buggy made his debut very early, during the Orange Town Arc. The first visuals that surfaced were menacing silhouettes glancing across the screen, creating the vibe for a perfect supervillain entrance – and then there was a clown, like, literally a clown.

What made it even tougher for him was that his Orange Town debut was probably his best showing in the series, fighting on par with Zoro and the rest of the then Straw Hat Pirates, and looking like a tough opponent until it all went downhill; he’s probably the most iconic character who appeared as a nobody in the series.

9 Kizaru – The Admiral Who Showed up Casually and Destroyed Everything

After being hyped for hundreds of episodes, one of the strongest admirals, Admiral Kizaru, finally made an appearance during the Sabaody Archipelago Arc. While all of us were expecting something big, especially after catching a glimpse of him a few episodes ago with Sengoku, we got something terrifying.

Instead of a normal fighter with a Paramecia-type powerful Devil Fruit, we got someone with a broken Logia-type Devil Fruit powers who jumped around with the speed of light and kicked Basil Hawkins through a building while making casual small talk. He was a broken character from the get-go for whom no one had an answer.

8 Enel – God-Like Man From Skypiea With an Intimidating Presence

Enel was Eiichiro Oda’s masterstroke: building up anticipation rather than a single dramatic entrance like Kizaru’s. Sitting on his throne in the sky, surrounded by lightning, he was framed as a literal god who had overwhelming powers over the people of Skypiea, even intimidating some of the Straw Hat Pirates, who are usually known for defying fear – well, except for Usopp, of course.

The terrifying part was the reveal of his Mantra ability – he could hear every sound across the entire island, meaning there was no plan he didn’t already know. Honestly speaking, Enel would have probably won and ended the story there if Luffy weren’t powered by the Gomu Gomu no Mi.

7 Doflamingo – The Arrogant Warlord Who Felt Like an Untouchable Brat

The first time we saw Donquixote Doflamingo in the series, he was a cocky Warlord of the Sea, attending a meeting along with the others. From the get-go, he gave off the vibe of being untouchable, acting with pride and overconfidence – descending at Marineford in his feathered coat, grinning like nothing in the world could touch him.

To make his pre-Dressrosa Arc even more intimidating, he used his strings to casually puppeteer a Marine commander like it was entertainment during the Marineford Arc. While everyone was fighting with a purpose and putting their all into it, Doflamingo was just there to watch and entertain himself.

6 Rob Lucci – The Shipyard Worker Who Became a Long-Time Villain

Oda often played with the concept of a subtle first entrance that turns into a massive villain reveal in the series a lot, and he applied the same formula to Rob Lucci, a peaceful-looking and pigeon-loving shipyard worker in Water 7 who later turned out to be an agent of CP9 from the World Government. The CP9 reveal is one of the greatest betrayal moments in anime history.

When the mask came off, and he pinned Luffy to the wall with Rokushiki techniques, the atmosphere of the entire series shifted – he was the first villain to push Luffy past his limits and use Gear 3. That alone tells how terrifying his debut was in the series.

5 Big Mom – A Behemoth Emperor Who Rampaged an Entire Island

Charlotte Linlin, aka Big Mom, was formally introduced in One Piece as a threat that was staggered brilliantly – we heard her voice in the dark silhouette, which immediately transpired into her screaming. There was nothing easy about her reveal in the series – it kept getting more and more intimidating.

But Oda didn’t stop there; he went on to explain her rule over Totto Land, a country where residents are extorted for their literal life force through her Soul-Soul Fruit – rampaging hungrily all over the island. Watching her run around and destroy everything in her path made all of us feel uneasy and scared to witness the power of a Yonko.

4 Blackbeard – The Contrasting Introduction Made It Even Scarier

Yes, you’re seeing it right: that goofy face belongs to none other than one of the most hated One Piece villains in the entire series – Marshall D. Teach, also known as Blackbeard. This was taken during the Jaya Arc, when he was first introduced as Luffy walked into a restaurant. All it was from Oda was another big bait-and-switch from Eiichiro Oda, like he did with Rob Lucci, but even more impactful this time.

His first appearance during the Jaya Arc suggests he could be an ally to Luffy, someone who truly understands him – only for it to become clear later that Blackbeard isn’t a similar man to Luffy, but his dark reflection. Whenever we rewatch the series now and remember what he has become, it sends a cold chill down the spine.

3 Kaido – The Drunk Who Fell From the Sky and Rose as a Monster

All we saw was a drunk silhouette falling from the sky and crashing into the Earth – only to emerge as a monster with a terrifying aura that shook everyone in its presence. As one of the most buffed characters in One Piece, Kaido stood tall as a mountain and looked down on Eustass Kid and the others with dark, shadowy eyes.

Kaido is probably the best-written villain in the latter half of the series – and his entrance was befitting his significance to the story. He didn’t speak much during his entrance; he didn’t need to. The presence was enough to tell his tale.

2 Sir Crocodile – The Hero of Alabasta Who Was a Villain All Along

We actually didn’t get to see a lot of actual face reveal of Mister 0 in the series for a while – it was just a lot of misty and dark rooms with a shadowy figure walking around and lighting up a cigar. Before Sir Crocodile‘s reveal as a villain in Alabasta, the series was still a lighthearted one; it became dark and deep in just a couple of episodes.

Sitting in his casino throne, hand resting in the sand that he could turn to quicksand at will, he addressed Luffy with the cold contempt of someone who had already won – this confidence is what made him more intimidating. To top that, in the first fight, Luffy lost against him, and not just lost – the protagonist was buried alive in the desert.

1 Akainu – The Admiral Who Gave Us the Darkest Marineford Tragedy

one piece akainu’s true opponent will get first real logia awakeningAkainu from One Piece | Credits: Toei Animation

What Akainu did in the Marinefore Arc shook the entire series and acted as a flip-switch for every fan to instantly hate him. The Marine Admiral at that time was present during Ace’s execution and fought against the Whitebeard-Straw Hat forces that came to free him. After a long and excruciating battle, Ace was freed and just about to escape, giving all of us hope that the good side had won.

Then the Admiral, armed with the Magu Magu no Mi Devil Fruit, punched a hole inside Ace’s chest and killed him. While that was traumatic and scary already, what makes Akainu’s presence so chilling isn’t just that one act – it’s the ideology behind it; for him, pirates are just “bad”, and the World Government is “good” – as simple as that.
