In One Piece, however, the stakes involve entire nations, races, and even history itself. Let’s dive into 10 One Piece arcs that clearly had higher stakes than anything we’ve seen in Demon Slayer.

1 Marineford Arc Dictated the Global Balance of Power

The Marineford Arc was a direct military clash between two of the world’s three great powers: Marine Headquarters and the Whitebeard Pirates. For starters, Ace’s life, Luffy’s older brother, was at stake. While that may sound small, the larger stakes involved the stability of the entire world itself.

If the Marines had lost, the World Government’s authority would have fallen apart, proving that the people could take the world back. The intensity in this arc was off the charts, and there may never be another One Piece arc like Marineford.

2 Wano Country Arc Had an Entire Country on Line

This arc was all about the liberation of a nation that had been subjugated for more than 20 years. Kaido and Orochi had turned the country into a massive weapons factory and enslaved millions of its citizens. In this arc, an entire nation was at stake. If Luffy and his allies had lost, the country would have suffered even more.

The stakes culminated in the raid on Onigashima, where Kaido sought to drop the island directly onto the people below in order to crush the rebellion and establish a new empire. That alone is massive, especially considering that the conflict in Demon Slayer rarely involved civilians.

3 Alabasta Arc Features the First Major Revolution in One Piece

In the Alabasta Arc, a massive, carefully planned civil war unfolded. Crocodile created a drought so the people of the nation would turn against their own king. The way this conflict played out also mirrored the real world. The immediate stakes involved a violent clash between the royal army and the rebel forces, which alone resulted in many deaths. On top of that, Crocodile planted a bomb intended to annihilate both armies instantly.

While the conflict may sound limited to a single country, Crocodile’s ultimate objective pushed the stakes far beyond that. He intended to overthrow the monarchy in order to uncover the Poneglyph hidden in the royal tombs, which contained the location of the ancient weapon Pluton. Its revival would have shaken the world of One Piece.

4 The Bird Cage of Dressrosa Arc Was Designed for a Genocide

In the Dressrosa Arc, Doflamingo used his Devil Fruit powers to surround the entire island with a shrinking cage of indestructible razor wire. The Birdcage was essentially a countdown to mass slaughter. Doflamingo intended to kill every citizen, pirate, and Marine on the island to prevent the truth about his criminal life from leaking to the outside world.

We can only imagine what further atrocities he would have committed, along with continuing his trade in artificial Devil Fruits, if he had left that island victorious. Thankfully, Luffy stopped him with an island-shaking attack of his own.

5 In the Egghead Arc, the Entire One Piece History Was at Stake

The Egghead Arc centers on the World Government’s attempt to assassinate Dr. Vegapunk, the world’s most brilliant scientist. The immediate stakes involved the possible destruction of Egghead Island, the most technologically advanced location on the planet, through a Marine Buster Call led by Admiral Kizaru and a member of the Five Elders.

While it may seem that only the island was at stake, the true stakes were informational and existential. Vegapunk triggered a dead man’s switch broadcast to the entire world, revealing the suppressed truth of the Void Century. He disclosed that the world is actively sinking into the ocean because of the use of Ancient Weapons. The entire conflict became a race to protect both the truth and the people of the island.

6 Skypiea Arc Involved Erasure of an Entire Landmass

Skypiea is one of the most important arcs in this anime. In this arc, Enel built the Ark Maxim, a flying ship capable of amplifying his lightning powers to catastrophic levels. His goal was to completely eradicate the sky islands of Angel Island and Upper Yard, sending the destroyed landmasses and their inhabitants plummeting to the Blue Sea below.

The stakes involved the immediate destruction of both the Skypieans and the Shandians. Furthermore, the destruction of Upper Yard would have erased the golden city of Shandora and the Poneglyph detailing the location of the ancient weapon Poseidon. Because of that, the stakes of this arc extended to history itself.

7 Enies Lobby Arc Decided the Monopoly Over Ancient Weapons

While the primary goal of the Enies Lobby Arc was to rescue Nico Robin, who had been captured by CP9, the World Government’s secret assassination unit, the underlying stakes centered on the blueprints for the weapon Pluton and Robin’s ability to read the Poneglyphs, which contained information about the Void Century. This was one of the best rescue arcs in anime history.

If the World Government had secured both the blueprints and Robin, it would have gained an absolute monopoly over world-ending technology. On top of that, a Buster Call, a naval bombardment capable of completely annihilating an island, was also imminent.

8 In Fish-Man Island Arc, an Entire Species Was on Line

The Fish-Man Island Arc confronted issues of severe racism and generational hatred. Hody Jones and the New Fish-Man Pirates staged a coup to kill the royal family. Hody’s objective was not just political control; he intended to drive the entire population of Fish-Man Island into a war against humanity, killing any fish-man who sympathized with humans.

Additionally, the ship Noah was thrown off course and set to crash directly into the island. If Noah had struck, it would have destroyed the bubble protecting Fish-Man Island, crushing the landmass and drowning every Devil Fruit user instantly.

9 Reverie Arc Had a Political Scale Unseen in Demon Slayer

The Reverie Arc had almost no fights, yet its stakes influenced nearly everything in the One Piece world. The arc focuses on the council of royal leaders affiliated with the World Government. The decisions made there reshape global law, meaning they affect nearly everything that happens in the world. One of the most significant outcomes of the Reverie was the abolition of the Seven Warlords system.

At the same time, the Revolutionary Army infiltrated the Holy Land of Mary Geoise to declare official war on the Celestial Dragons. King Cobra of Alabasta, Vivi’s father, was assassinated for questioning the World Government’s history. This single summit led directly to the annihilation of the Lulusia Kingdom, which was wiped off the map by a mysterious weapon. The island was not only erased from the map, but also from history.

10 Impel Down Arc Unleashed History’s Worst Criminals

Impel Down is the most secure prison in the One Piece world. There, Luffy’s infiltration caused massive riots, but the truly catastrophic consequence came from Marshall D. Teach, or Blackbeard, who used the chaos to reach Level 6, the lowest level of the prison, where the government had erased history’s most atrocious criminals from the record.

The collapse of Impel Down resulted in the escape of hundreds of dangerous criminals back into the world. This massive prison break shattered public trust in the Marines and directly gave Blackbeard the military force he needed to become a Yonko, permanently altering the power hierarchy of the New World.
