While Marvel Studios has been very clear that the MCU is not getting a reboot post-Avengers: Secret Wars, it has been stated that it will be reset after the sixth Avengers film rolls around. Introducing the X-Men era of the setting, the MCU is headed towards some big changes. The idea is going to be to follow through a single narrative line, as it did during the Infinity Saga. There is also talk of keeping what has worked and throwing out what hasn’t. Feige said (via Variety):
Reboot can mean a lot of things to a lot of people. Reset, singular timeline – we’re thinking along those lines.
One of the main issues that has plagued the post-Endgame MCU is the sheer lack of follow-ups to the various post-credits/mid -credits scenes that have followed films, contributing to the disconnect that fans felt between movies. Further, there are some from even the Infinity Saga that are yet to be followed up on. However, given the promise of a reset that might throw out parts of the MCU that haven’t worked, some post-credit scenes might be shown the door, instead of being followed up on.
1 Baron Mordo’s Vengeance Might Be Erased By The Reset
Baron Karl Mordo could have been a great villain for the sequel || Credit: Marvel Studios There was a passing acknowledgment of Baron Mordo trying to kill Stephen Strange in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, but that was far from what the first film had teased during its post-credit scene. Baron Mordo had come to the conclusion that there were too many sorcerers. However, instead of having the student of the Ancient One who gave Stephen Strange a run for his money has not managed to kill a single sorcerer. If anything, magic in the MCU has simply expanded. It is likely that this will be one of the plotlines that simply vanishes for good (as if it has not already).
2 Stakar Ogord’s Guardians Of The Galaxy Aren’t Getting Their Time To Shine
This version of the Guardians of the Galaxy was the original team in the comics || Credit: Marvel StudiosAt the end of the second Guardians film, Sylvester Stallone’s Stakar Ogord assembled a group of fellow high-ranking Ravager leaders in a bid to organize them into the “old team”. All the characters present are the members of the original Guardians of the Galaxy from Marvel Comics. However, their presence is largely ignored after the post-credit scene. This team is likely not going to survive the culling that Secret Wars is going to bring.
3 Xu Xialing’s Ten Rings Might Never Realize Their Ambition
Xu Xialing took over the operation of the Ten Rings after the demise of her father. However, Shang Chi is under the impression that she will be dismantling the Ten Rings. Unlike the other post-credit scene, where Wong invites Shang-Chi and Katy to the Sanctum Sanctorum, and is likely going to bear fruit come Avengers: Doomsday, it is unlikely that the franchise is going to follow up on this version of the Ten Rings Organization going forward. It would not be surprising if the ‘reset’ makes it similar to the depiction of the terrorist group as it was depicted in Iron Man and Iron Man 3.
4 Eros Might No Longer Be “Thanos’ Brother” After Avengers: Secret Wars
Pip the Troll and Eros came in in the post-credit scene of Eternals || Credit: Marvel StudiosEros was teased at the end of Eternals and was explicitly called the Brother of Thanos. However, given that the character is depicted as an Eternal, which means that he is a synthetic/artificial being, it implies that Thanos’ heritage might be more dubious than it was let on. Given that there is no Eternals 2 in sight for now either, and that these characters are also not going to aid in the fighting of Doom, it’s no stretch to assume that Eternals, and the post-credit scene, might end up in the ‘no’ pile when Marvel decides what to keep and what to throw out.
5 Blade Could Be Recast After Failing To Get A Project Up
Dane Whitman was visited by Blade, which remains Blade’s only live-action appearance in the MCU || Credit: Marvel StudiosDane Whitman’s inclusion in Eternals remains another plot thread that has yet to be revisited. Equally frustrating is the lack of momentum for Mahershala Ali’s character, especially considering it served as the MCU’s first, albeit audio-only, live-action introduction to Blade. Given the extensive production delays, there is growing speculation about potential recasting. Alternatively, Marvel could adapt the in-universe timeline to accommodate these delays without losing Ali in the role.
6 Spider-Man Could Encounter Venom Elsewhere
Venom left a piece of himself in the MCU that was teased at the end of Spider-Man: No Way Home. With Secret Wars approaching, the timing is perfect to introduce Peter’s black suit. However, given the reception that Sony’s Marvel Universe has received, the MCU might see it fit to introduce Venom later in Peter’s story, possibly after the reset, through different means.
7 Hercules Might Never Get A Chance To Hunt Thor
Brett Goldstein as Hercules in Thor: Love and Thunder | Credits: Marvel Studios Zeus tasked Hercules with putting the fear of the gods in mortals after Thor: Love and Thunder. However, instead of the epic match-up that might have been in the cards for the god of thunder and the prince of power, it is likely that Thor’s story will continue without Hercules, given that Love and Thunder did not work out at all as Marvel expected.
8 Jane Foster’s Ascension To Valhalla Could Pose A Threat To Doom- Or Be Erased Completely
Natalie Portman meets Heimdall after she dies || Credit: Marvel StudiosJane Foster found her way to Valhalla with Heimdall, and presumably other dead Asgardians. While this could be built on in Avengers: Doomsday or Secret Wars as one of the people who come to aid the Avengers in their fight, it is also likely that Marvel would simply write it off, given that bringing back characters like Odin and Frigga, and also possibly Loki from the main universe, would muddy the waters too much for general audiences.
9 The Council of Kangs Are Definitely On The Chopping Block
The Council of Kangs in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania’s mid-credits scene || Credit: Marvel StudiosWith Jonathan Majors having exited the MCU and Kang going away with him, it is almost certain that the council of Kangs will no longer be part of the wider universe. Further, it is likely that Kang is going to be recast as well, possibly making him more comics accurate by making him a descendant of Reed Richards through Franklin. His entire arc might be on the chopping block, too, given how much time was spent setting him up.
10 We Might Never See The Damage Sharon Carter Has Done As The Powerbroker
Sharon Carter as the Powerbroker || Credit: Marvel Television Sharon Carter’s story post-Civil War saw her on the run from the government. However, with her access to the government restored, Carter immediately began brokering state secrets, revealing herself to be the Powerbroker. Given the espionage background of Captain America: Brave New World, this would have been a perfect time to follow up on it. However, this was not the case, and as much of a bombshell development as it was, it is likely that this is going to be thrown out in favor of a cleaner story as well.
