There are many ways to describe Re:ZERO – Starting Life in Another World. It’s an isekai anime that throws all the tropes out of the window, which results in some of the best episodes ever. The plot follows Natsuki Subaru, a depressed teenager who is isekaid into a fantasy world.
While at first it appears his story is just like any other generic isekai, viewers quickly realize it’s full of gruesome horror instead. Let’s rank the best episodes this anime has given us, based on the ratings the viewers have given it.
| TITLE | Re: Zero |
| CREATOR | Tappei Nagatsuki |
| SEASON 4 RELEASE DATE | April 8, 2026 |
| IMDb RATING (As of June 3, 2026) | 8.2 / 10 |
| WHERE TO WATCH | Crunchyroll |
10 Season 3 Episode 13 – The Warrior’s Commendation
Garfield from Re:ZERO | Credit: White FoxThis episode is centered around two main events. Capells tries to trap Al by taking advantage of his loyalty to Priscilla. And at the same time, Garfiel fights Kugan, a legendary warrior with eight arms who is in control of the Witch Cult right now.
This episode became one of the highest rated for giving us a Garfiel moment that proved this anime can show a good battle as well. Furthermore, there was a strong contrast by showing Al’s perspective along with Garfiel’s epic battle that elevated the whole experience.
9 Season 4 Episode 6 – Julius Juukulius
Julius from Re:ZERO | Credit: White FoxThis episode follows the events when Subaru and others try to cross the second floor of the Pleiades Watchtower. Emilia has already passed the exam; however, now it’s Julius’ turn to finally fight against the stick swinger, Reid Astrea, who is the first sword saint and ancestor of Reinhard, the strongest person in this anime.
Julius loses, however, we got to see a great moment between him and Subaru. It is through his monologue that we get to learn that while it appeared Julius hated Subaru in the beginning, he was actually moved by his words alone. It was a great character-focused episode.
8 Season 4 Episode 2 – Overcome Sand Time
Beatrice from Re:ZERO | Credit: White FoxSubaru and his team must cross the Auguria Dunes to reach the Watchtower; however, the desert is full of extreme heat, space-bending magic, and dangerous magic beasts. Subaru figures out a way to reach the tower, something that not even Reinhard could do. However, he is immediately killed right after by something mysterious.
This episode proved that Subaru is finally growing less and less reliant on his return by death ability. He managed to utilize the abilities of both Meili and Ram. The shock value from his death was the highlight of this episode, which earned a high rating.
7 Season 2 Episode 8 – The Value of Life
Subaru from Re:ZERO | Credit: White FoxThis is one of the most horrifying episodes in this anime. Subaru ends up getting eaten alive by great rabbits, which breaks him mentally. However, this episode was not all dark. After meeting Echidna, Subaru finally gets to say it out loud that he can return by death.
Until now, every time he tried to say it out loud, his heart was crushed by Satella. In fact, even if he tried bearing with the pain, Satella would then hurt someone else instead of him. This episode is a necessary pivot for the entire anime, which earned it its amazing ratings.
6 Season 2 Episode 24 – Choose Me
Subaru from Re:ZERO | Credit: White FoxThis is one of the bigger turning points in the anime, but for good this time. Subaru runs into the burning library to save Beatrice, who has been waiting for 400 years for a specific person to save her. Subaru doesn’t declare himself to be that person, but he asks her to choose him instead.
This episode starts the official contract between Beatrice and Subaru, and most of the conflicts of the season have started to resolve, which earned this episode the rating it has.
5 Season 2 Episode 11 – The Taste of Death
Elsa from Re:ZERO | Credit: White FoxSubaru watches Elsa murder Beatrice. Furthermore, he then finds Emilia, who has lost her mind due to the trials. She kisses him while surrounded by dead bodies, which was quite horrifying to watch. Later, Roswaal admits he ordered the murders to force Subaru to become stronger.
This episode is a pure study of psychological horror. It strips away all plot armor and shows the worst possible result of failure. During the events of this episode, it did not look like there was any hope, and it was hard to even keep track of every enemy.
4 Season 2 Episode 23 – Love Me down to My Blood and Guts
Elsa from Re:ZERO | Credit: White FoxIn this episode, Emilia finally finishes the trial, and her resolve to become the next ruler gets stronger. Meanwhile, we also get to see an epic battle between Garfield and Elsa, in which Elsa finally dies. However, before that, she manages to give Garfield deep trauma, which is going to haunt him for the rest of his life.
The reason this episode gets such a good rating is that it starts resolving many plot points, including the ones that were established in the first few episodes of the first season back in 2016. For example, Roswaal finally gets confronted, Elsa dies, and Emilia clears the witch trials for good.
3 Season 4 Episode 3 – The Keeper of the Watchtower
Subaru from Re:ZERO | Credit: White FoxRight after reaching the tower, everyone gets separated from each other. Subaru wakes up in a tunnel along with Anastasia, Ram, and the land dragon Patrasche. It doesn’t take long before this episode becomes one of the most horrifying in the anime. Subaru gets a choice to make between a split in the tunnel, and he chooses a direction where the Witch’s Miasma gets denser and denser. Due to the miasma, Subaru and others start getting more enraged, and Subaru ends up choking Ram to death.
In his next loop, after getting eaten by Patrasche, he chooses a different route, where there is another horror that awaits him. However, he and Ram do end up being saved by Shaula. This episode earned this insane high rating by delivering pure horror of losing control, complemented by the POV we got of Subaru as he was eaten alone in the dark. This episode was easily one of the darkest isekai episodes of all time.
2 Season 1 Episode 15 – The Outside of Madness
Subaru from Re:ZERO | Credit: White FoxWhile the anime starts to really get better from Season 2, Season 1 also had an amazing episode. In this episode, Subaru and Rem are captured by the witch cult, where Subaru is forced to see Rem as she is tortured in horrible ways. However, with her last breath, she manages to save Subaru. Subaru then takes her dead body to the mansion, only to discover that everyone has been killed.
Furthermore, Puck, according to his contract, then begins destroying the world, starting with Subaru, by slicing his head off, as Subaru watches in disbelief, and the credits roll with one of the best music themes ever. This was a jaw-dropping episode, and is totally deserving of this high ranking.

As of June 2026, this is one of the latest episodes of this anime. Subaru makes a plan to cross the second floor; however, the anime immediately cuts to him having lost his memories. From his perspective, he has just been teleported into this world, and it’s the start of an isekai fantasy for him. Everyone is confused and worried; however, Subaru is trying to look at the bright side.
He is then pushed off from a great height and immediately dies. He thinks to himself that he had a prophetic dream, that he has a future-seeing ability. However, it takes one more gruesome death before he realizes that he did, in fact, die. He has a mental breakdown, where he ends up hurting Beatrice as well, and is then hurt really badly by the stick swinger. He cries on the stairs, slowly dying, regretting how he didn’t say bye to his parents.
For this episode, the author’s mother herself called the author a devil. As of right now, this is the highest-rated episode in this anime, for it had everything. It had a start that confused the viewers, a horrifying death that broke Subaru, and even character interactions that prove how much Subaru is loved in this new world.
