Spoiler Alert !!!
Spoiler Warning for George R.R. Martin's Fire & Blood
House of the Dragon Season 3 is shaping up to be the point where the Dance of the Dragons finally lives up to its name, with dragons moving from background symbols of power to full-scale weapons of war.
Fans are already speculating about which legendary beasts will collide, from desired House of the Dragon Season 3 storylines to newer matchups involving dragonseeds and rookie riders. Some of these fights are drawn directly from the source material, while others are the kind of “what if” clashes the show could still choose to explore.
Ranked below are the 10 dragon fights fans are most eager to see in Season 3, based on hype, stakes, and pure spectacle potential.
10 Silverwing vs. Dreamfyre: The Forgotten Queens of Fire
Dreamfyre in House of the Dragon / Credits: HBOThis clash isn’t really on everyone’s card, but it can potentially happen in the show. We know Helaena isn’t keen on taking Dreamfyre out for a spin, especially not during a war, but what if desperate times called for desperate measures?
If Silverwing ever meets Dreamfyre in the sky, the fight would likely be less about brute dominance and more about endurance and control. If this happens on screen, it could stand out as one of the most hauntingly beautiful and unexpected dragon encounters in the franchise.
However, we rank this the lowest as the fight is less likely to happen, with Helaena refusing to participate in the war.
9 Vermax vs. Tessarion: The Young Dragons’ First Real Battle
Jace Velaryon and Vermax in House of the Dragon / Credits: HBOA fight between Vermax and Tessarion can represent one of the first true “next-generation” dragon clashes in House of the Dragon Season 3, where younger mounts are finally thrown into real warfare. Both dragons are still relatively fresh to large-scale combat, which makes this matchup less about dominance and more about speed, timing, and rider decision-making.
Vermax, tied to Jacaerys Velaryon, brings duty and strategy into the sky, while Tessarion, bonded to Daeron Targaryen, carries the Greens’ growing confidence in their dragon power. Seeing this on Season 3 might be a long shot, but surely anything can happen within the first episode!
This fight, however, takes a low spot in the ranking since it is very unlikely that Vermax and Jace would survive the Battle of the Gullet, making a showdown against Tessarion highly improbable.
8 Silverwing vs. Tessarion: Which New Rider Has the Edge?
Silverwing in House of the Dragon / Credits: HBOSilverwing and Tessarion can be one of the most intriguing dragonseed-era matchups in House of the Dragon Season 3, putting two newer riders and their dragons under the spotlight. It’s less about established legends and more about who can prove themselves first in a rapidly escalating civil war.
What’s even more interesting here are their riders. Silverwing is tied to the bastard Ulf White, whose rise represents sudden opportunity and uncertain loyalty. Tessarion, on the other hand, is linked to Daeron, a true royal whose presence reinforces the Greens’ belief in blood legitimacy and trained command.
This duel ranks low on the list because, although Silverwing and Tessarion are expected to cross paths during the First Battle of Tumbleton, an actual dragon battle may never materialize as Ulf White is destined to betray the Blacks and switch sides.
7 Seasmoke vs. Sunfyre: A Clash of Fan Favorites
Seasmoke and Sunfyre stand out not just for their design, but for the emotional weight tied to their riders. Seasmoke was left riderless after Laenor Velaryon’s disappearance before choosing the dragonseed Addam of Hull, marking a rare “reverse claiming” in the series.
Sunfyre’s bond with Aegon II Targaryen is shown as deeply loyal and almost affectionate, especially during and after the Battle at Rook’s Rest. Even after their fall, Sunfyre’s instinct to protect Aegon highlights the strength of their connection. If both recover and clash, it could become one of the most emotionally charged and visually striking battles in House of the Dragon Season 3.
This dragon clash ranks in the lower tier because Sunfyre is unlikely to return to the skies and engage in battle so soon after the devastating injuries he suffered at Rook’s Rest.
6 Sheepstealer vs. Sunfyre: The Wild Dragon & the Golden Dragon
Sheepstealer in House of the Dragon / Credits: HBOSheepstealer is set to make a proper debut in House of the Dragon Season 3 with Rhaena Targaryen potentially claiming the dragon. A wild, untamed creature that answers to no one, this beast survived outside the rules of Targaryen control and embodied pure instinct.
Sunfyre, by contrast, is the golden symbol of Aegon II’s rule—beautiful, disciplined, and closely tied to royal identity. The contrast between them isn’t just visual, but ideological: chaos and survival versus order and legitimacy. This match would definitely become one of the most unexpected and symbolically loaded dragon battles in the series.
While this is an intriguing matchup, the show may not deliver a clash between these two dragons yet, as Sunfyre is still recovering while Sheepstealer remains in the Vale, which is why this fight ranks low on the list.
5 Moondancer vs. Sunfyre: Agility Against Royal Power
Moondancer in House of the Dragon / Credits: HBOIn Fire & Blood, Moondancer and Sunfyre do clash during the final stages of the Dance of the Dragons, and it’s one of the most brutal and desperate dragon encounters in the war. While we don’t highly expect this climactic fight to happen in Season 3, it remains one of the most anticipated dragon fights in canon.
Given its significance in the story, it feels less like a question of if it will be adapted and more like a matter of when. In the book, the clash stands out not for scale, but for how chaotic and tragic it is—two exhausted dragons colliding at the end of a collapsing war.
We place this dragon encounter in the middle of the ranking because it is highly likely to occur in the show, even if fans are generally more excited about other dragon clashes.
4 Seasmoke vs. Tessarion: The Most Visually Stunning Duel
Tessarion in House of the Dragon / Credits: HBOThe odds of a Seasmoke and Tessarion fight might be slim, but it is an interesting one. If this ever miraculously happens in Season 3, it will be one of the most visually striking duels in the show, built entirely on contrast and motion.
Seasmoke’s pale silver body and fluid, almost ghostlike flight style would make him one of the most elegant dragons in the sky. Tessarion counters with vivid coloration and sharp, aggressive movements that feel precise and controlled. Both dragons are fast and agile, meaning the fight would likely unfold as a chaotic aerial dance rather than a brute-force clash.
While we’re not sure if this will ever happen in the series, it’s a fight that would look spectacular on screen, and sometimes we just enjoy the idea of magnificent dragons carving fire through the sky in a breathtaking aerial duel.
3 Caraxes vs. Vermithor: Daemon’s Dragon Faces Its Biggest Test
Vermithor in House of the Dragon / Credits: HBONot necessarily a likely confrontation in Season 3, since they are both on the same side (at least until Hugh Hammer potentially turns on the Blacks), but it’s still one that fans constantly debate. Would Daemon’s experience and Caraxes’ ferocity be enough to overcome Vermithor’s immense size and raw power?
Daemon’s infamous Blood Wyrm is known for his vicious combat style and unpredictable aggression in battle. Vermithor, the Bronze Fury, is one of the largest and most experienced dragons alive, carrying centuries of dominance in the skies.
This clash is the kind of matchup fans want to see, regardless of the situation, simply because it pits two of the most formidable dragons in Westeros, and this is why we give this a high spot in the list.
2 Vermithor vs. Vhagar: A Battle of Westeros’ Biggest Beasts
Vhagar in House of the Dragon / Credits: HBONow this is the closest thing the show could deliver to a true “monster battle” in the skies of Westeros. Both dragons in House of the Dragon Season 3 are massive and built for destruction on a scale no other living creatures can match.
Vhagar, the oldest and most battle-tested dragon alive, has already proven she can end wars almost singlehandedly. Vermithor, on the other hand, brings centuries of dormant power that could finally be unleashed in full-scale combat. Their potential collision in Season 3 could not only end in a bloody fight but also in a catastrophic turning point in the civil war.
The prospect of pitting two of the largest and most battle-hardened dragons in Westeros against each other is a long-standing fan dream, which is why this legendary clash ranks second.
1 Caraxes vs. Vhagar: The Fight Everyone Is Waiting For
Although this will likely take place toward the end of the Dance of the Dragons, Caraxes and Vhagar’s duel remains the most anticipated dragon showdown in House of the Dragon Season 3. It represents the ultimate collision of speed and brutality against unmatched size and endurance.
Caraxes is built for vicious, close-range combat and relentless aggression in the sky. Vhagar, ridden by Aemond Targaryen, is the oldest and largest dragon alive, a living weapon that has ended battles through sheer overwhelming force. Beyond the spectacle, the fight is also deeply personal, driven by the escalating feud between Daemon and Aemond.
It is safe to say that the Battle Above the Gods Eye is the most anticipated dragon fight in the franchise. It is brutal and bloody, but also exciting and tragic, hence why we give the top spot to Caraxes and Vhagar’s showdown.
