A soundtrack refers to the collection of music used in a film, which could be anything from original compositions to pre-existing songs. It often feels like the only thing lacking in our lives is a great background score, but watching a movie compensates for it.
To me, music is the difference between a great movie and an exceptional one. I’ve listed out the soundtracks and ranked them according to their lasting impression, and how often I still visit them once in a while to feel something. So if you haven’t watched these movies, I’d highly recommend that you do!
10 Donnie Darko (2001)
A still from Donnie Darko | Credits: Flower FilmsI found Donnie Darko‘s soundtrack to be its most defining element. Richard Kelly’s cult classic movie follows a troubled teenager named Donnie, who sees strange visions of mysterious figures, and begins to grapple with questions about time, destiny, etc. What I love about its soundtrack is the way it mirrors the film’s strange, dreamlike tone. The soft and ambient music by Michael Andrews, paired with songs from the 80s, creates a nostalgic yet unsettling atmosphere. Whenever I listen to Donnie Darko’s music, I feel like I am pulled into his lonely world, full of quiet, lingering sadness.
9 Oppenheimer (2023)
It’s no wonder that Ludwig Göransson won an Oscar for composing Oppenheimer‘s score because it was simply epic! The solo violin that shifts from hopeful to anxious tones mirrors Oppenheimer’s inner turmoil, and Göransson’s music plays through the majority of the movie. It feels like a ticking clock and creates a constant tension, like time is running out, and something catastrophic is going to happen. I honestly felt a deep sense of unease, and the music stayed in my head even later, carrying the weight of the story with it.
8 Pulp Fiction (1994)
A still from Pulp Fiction | Credits: Miramax FilmsPulp Fiction redefined how music could be used in movies! Quentin Tarantino’s film told multiple interconnected stories, and today, the songs are as memorable as the characters themselves. Like most Tarantino movies, it doesn’t rely on a traditional music score; instead, Tarantino’s curated mix of tracks, such as Misirlou. When I hear these songs now, I immediately picture the characters dancing or having a conversation. Every tune feels perfectly placed, like it belongs to the scene!
7 The Godfather Part II (1974)
A still from The Godfather Part II | Credits: Paramount PicturesNino Rota’s score for The Godfather Part II and even the first installment feels timeless. The movie tells two parallel stories, one of Michael Corleone as he struggles to maintain power over his crime empire, while the other is in the past, tracing the rise of his father, Vito Corleone, played by Robert De Niro.
Carmine Coppola also contributes to the movie’s score, and together, they build upon themes from the first film, with new musical compositions that tie to younger characters and immigrant life. I’ve never heard something that sounds so elegant yet melancholic, and it conveys exactly what the film has to say about choice, family, and legacy.
6 Titanic (1997)
A still from Titanic | Credits: 20th Century FoxJames Cameron’s Titanic made people sob in theaters, and part of the reason that people were so moved by Jack and Rose’s love story was James Horner’s orchestral music, and the song, My Heart Will Go On, sung by Celine Dion. Listening to the soundtrack makes me feel like I am revisiting a love that’s beautiful but fleeting. The music from Titanic doesn’t just accompany the film, but also carries its soul! There’s a sense of tenderness, grandeur, romance, and heartbreak etched into each composition.
5 Schindler’s List (1993)
A still from Schindler’s List | Credits: Universal PicturesThough Schindler’s List’s music has become a part of meme culture, it’s often described as one of the most heartbreaking pieces of music in cinema. Steven Spielberg’s movie is about Oskar Schindler, a German industrialist who saves more than 1,100 Jews during the Holocaust and employs them in his factories. John Williams’ score centers on a haunting violin, and the overall music draws from traditional Jewish sounds. For me, Schindler’s List score proves that even the softest and minimal music can carry the heaviest emotions.
4 Dune (2021)
A still from Dune | Credits: Legendary PicturesDune: Part Three’s war chant in the trailer has fascinated everyone, but the foundation of this epic music was laid in Dune, the first installment. Hans Zimmer’s music is almost spiritual, grand, and alien in the best way possible. I find the choir parts, heavy percussion, and otherworldly arrangements to be unforgettable because it feels like I am witnessing the birth of a legend, not just watching a movie!
3 La La Land (2016)
A still from La La Land | Credits: Summit EntertainmentLa La Land made me ugly cry at the end, and if you’ve watched the movie, you will know why. It’s a musical, and Justin Hurwitz has woven the perfect note in every fabric of the movie. The songs performed by Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling, the jazz music they play, everything is simply all too perfect. It’s one of those movies that has made it to my top 5, and its soundtrack is the number one reason for it!
2 The Bodyguard (1992)
The Bodyguard album became the best-selling soundtrack of all time, and it was largely due to the song I Will Always Love You. The movie follows Secret Service agent Frank, who is hired to protect Rachel, a famous singer, from a dangerous stalker. But then we see a love story between the two, complemented with pop, soul, and ballads that perfectly go with the story’s themes. There’s a raw surge of emotions within me every time I hear the soundtrack of The Bodyguard, and if you haven’t heard it yet, now’s the time!
1 Interstellar (2014)
A still from Interstellar | Credits: Paramount PicturesInterstellar will forever be remembered for its visuals and story, but what elevates them both is Hans Zimmer’s music. S.T.A.Y. is the score that speaks to me the most. I can never forget how it made me feel the first time I watched this movie. It was too surreal, indescribable, and something that can only be experienced. The story might feature concepts of time and space, but at its core, it’s a movie about a father and daughter who are separated. And Zimmer’s score almost evokes a feeling of love that travels through all cosmic boundaries.
