When it comes to anime characters, the love and hate ratio is almost always balanced out in the fandom – while some absolutely adore them, others dislike them. While it is almost impossible to find a character that is just loved and adored by the fans with zero hate, there are plenty of characters already present that we might not have realised.
Based on a character’s personality traits, the general reception they get from the fans, and their acts in their respective series, here are some of the most iconic anime characters who have almost zero haters. We’ve also ranked them by how popular these characters are from the zero-hate perspective.
10 Jonathan Joestar From JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure Is a Pure Gentleman
Jonathan Joestar from JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure | Credits: David ProductionUnlike many shonen protagonists, Jonathan Joestar from JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure is almost impossibly kind-hearted – even when facing betrayal, manipulation, and death, he stays noble to the very end. Even as a child, Jonathan might have been mischievous and proud, but he was always gentle.
What makes him special is that in an anime franchise filled with chaos and insanity, Jonathan remains one of anime’s most universally respected heroes. Jonathan is the embodiment of absolute purity and unwavering integrity.
9 Tohru Honda From Fruits Basket Has a Kindness That Feels Genuine
Tohru Honda from Fruits Basket | Credits: TMS/8PANTohru Honda from the Fruits Basket anime series is the definition of emotional comfort. Her compassion changes the lives of everyone around her, yet she never comes off as self-righteous – a characteristic very rare among anime characters with such influence.
To top that, she constantly does goofy things in the series, which equally balance out her compassionate sides. Even viewers who normally dislike overly nice characters struggle to hate Tohru; her empathy feels genuine and earned.
8 Nanami From Jujutsu Kaisen Has a Strong and Respectable Personality
Kento Nanami from Jujutsu Kaisen | Credits: MAPPAIn an anime series where chaos and massive power scaling are second nature, Jujutsu Kaisen gave us a level-headed mentor figure in Kento Nanami. Nanami became a fan favourite almost immediately thanks to his calm personality, dry humour, and mature worldview.
Unlike characters with massive egos because of their position, Nanami treats younger sorcerers with respect while still being brutally competent in battle. The entire community was heartbroken after what happened to him in the Shibuya Incident Arc – which further proves the love he received from the community.
7 Shanks From One Piece Is the Coolest Emperor From Day One
Shanks from One Piece | Credits: Toei AnimationIs Red-Haired Shanks the most forgiving? No. Is he the coolest Emperor of the Sea from the One Piece series? Absolutely. Shanks barely appears compared to other major One Piece characters, yet every appearance becomes legendary. He literally gave up his arm to protect Luffy from day one of the series.
He’s powerful without showing off, intimidating without cruelty, and charismatic without trying too hard – Whether it’s inspiring Luffy or ending wars with his presence alone, Shanks has maintained near-universal popularity for decades. He can be scary, but only to the villains.
6 All Might From My Hero Academia Forever Remains the Symbol of Hope
All Might from My Hero Academia | Credits: Bones Inc.Despite Izuku Midoriya being the main protagonist, and the other Class 1-A students being just as important in the My Hero Academia series, All Might has always been the main pivotal character. He embodied classic heroism perfectly – his smile, charisma, and willingness to sacrifice everything for others made him instantly lovable.
What stands as a true testament to fans’ love for him is that his popularity continued even after he lost his powers. The Symbol of Hope from the series kept inspiring and motivating others even after his retirement as the number one hero.
5 Maes From Fullmetal Alchemist Is Everyone’s Favourite Big Brother
Maes Hughes from Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood | Credits: Bones Inc.Maes Hughes from the Fullmetal Alchemist series is like the complete package – he’s funny, supportive, loyal, and endlessly devoted to his family. He’s basically like a friend that all of us wished we had, and his impact on the series is massive – to the point where a level-headed character like Roy Mustang lost control when he learned about Hughes’ death.
While it may sound bitter, the only people who dislike Hughes are the viewers who haven’t watched the Fullmetal Alchemist or Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood series.
4 Levi Ackerman From Attack on Titan Is Humanity’s Strongest Icon
Levi Ackerman from Attack on Titan | Credits: Wit StudioThere’s seriously nothing to hate about Levi Ackerman from Attack on Titan; whatever he did in the series had a huge degree of self-restraint on emotions and strategic prowess in them. Even when he lost his cool against the Beast Titan, there was something satisfying about his lock-in moment in the anime.
He’s cold without being heartless and intimidating without becoming edgy – Levi remained one of the few characters almost everyone consistently supported.
3 Kamina From Gurren Lagann Has a Larger-Than-Life Personality
Kamina from Gurren Lagann | Credits: GainaxKamina from Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann is one of those characters that every anime fan almost universally loves – he’s loud, reckless, overconfident, and somehow still unbelievably inspiring. What makes him so iconic is his “never give up” attitude – even when he’s completely outmatched, he charges forward with absolute belief in himself and his friends.
Even though the character barely has any screentime in the anime series, some of the anime’s most iconic motivational lines and moments come directly from him. Imagine him as an inspiring character like All Might, but more natural and better.
2 Anya Forger From Spy X Family Is Cuteness Overloaded
Anya Forger from Spy x Family | Credits: Wit StudioAnya Forger from Spy X Family is one of the cutest and most lovable kids in anime. Very few anime characters achieve the level of universal affection Anya has – her expressions became memes worldwide, her comedy never gets old, and her innocent attempts to help usually create absolute chaos.
She is almost impossible to dislike, which became even more evident as she actually won the award for “Must Protect At All Costs” Character three times in a row at Crunchyroll’s Anime Awards 2024, 2025, and 2026.
1 Tanjiro Kamado From Demon Slayer Is the Nicest Shonen MC Ever
This is an absolute no-brainer: Tanjiro Kamado from the Demon Slayer series is one of the nicest and kindest protagonists shonen anime has seen for a while, maybe even forever. Not only is Tanjiro a considerate human being, even towards demons, but he is also extremely caring and protective towards his friends and demon sister, Nezuko.
Even though we saw the goofy anime character burst into rage mode against Hantengu, that was just a one-off before the Infinity Castle Arc. Many anime main characters have controversies tied to them – Tanjiro is a simpleton who would do anything to protect others.
