Police said emergency crews responded to a fire on Muirfield Gardens in the Cedarhill Estate neighbourhood on Tuesday shortly before 3:30 p.m., where they found smoke inside a home from a fire in the basement.

All residents escaped the home, with one person suffering minor smoke inhalation, but police said three dogs perished in the fire.

It took almost an hour before the fire was declared under control.

The youth, who cannot be named under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, appeared in court on Wednesday. They face several charges including arson, possession of incendiary material, uttering threats to cause death or bodily harm, killing or injuring animals and causing unnecessary suffering to an animal.

Police said the investigation was in the hands of the Ottawa Fire Services investigator and Ontario’s Office of the Fire Marshal.
