I have read a lot recently about the need for bail reform. I agree that there needs to be bail reform and stricter sentencing for serious crimes, but In order to combat the ‘hire a kid to shoot and kill’ phenomenon, a serious look at changing the Youth Criminal Justice Act (YCJA) needs to occur. No matter what your age is at the time of the offence, if you commit a serious criminal act — murder, robbery, sexual assault, or any offence with a firearm — you are now treated as an adult throughout the court process and sentencing. Who knows, maybe these wannabe thugs may think twice. A $1,000 fine, or the possibility of life in prison. Just a thought.

(This is a very real consideration which should be addressed. There is a mentality having these kids commit the crimes because they won’t have the book thrown at them. The criminals arranging these crimes know this. We need to call their bluff)
SCAMMING THE SYSTEM
Re “1 in 10 using food banks” (Jordan Ercit, June 22): The cost of everything is up, inflation is real and serious. We all know it, we all get it, we all buy gas and groceries. But are things as dire as some invested food bank advocates would automatically have us believe? “One in ten” Torontonians “have” to use a food bank? That’s huge. Can it really be true, that many? Widespread welfare fraud is also real, just look south of the border. Isn’t it time to ask some open and frank questions about food banks? Are all users in need, all legit? How much is the hard-pressed taxpayer, once again, being scammed? Unlike bureaucrats in California and Minnesota, does anyone bother to check?
