Your Every Spider-Man: Brand New Day Question Answered

Spider-Man: Brand New Day is here as Tom Holland’s fourth time around as MCU Spider-Man. It packs into its runtime more than your typical superhero blockbuster. It has a pretty dense plot (to its detriment, some might say). After Holland’s Spidey became anonymous thanks to Doctor Strange’s reality-altering spell in the last movie, No Way Home, he faces a new threat. Apart from introducing new characters and villains, the movie also gives a radical new direction to Peter Parker’s future. It also expands the MCU’s mutant mythos. 

​But most of all, it leaves audiences with lingering mysteries. Most of them are answered during the movie, but they can be too abstruse, particularly if you were focused on the web-swinging and the action. These questions concern what or who exactly is V-Max, Jean Grey’s motivations, the reason behind Peter Parker’s terrifying transformation and what its significance is, what do Brand New Day‘s post-credits scene means, and what the future holds for Holland’s Spidey. 1. What Is V-Max and Why Is Everyone Looking for It?

For most of the movie’s runtime, V-Max seems sort of a MacGuffin. Sadie Sink’s Jean Grey is searching for it. We don’t know whether it is a device or an artifact or even a person. Jean tears through the Department of Damage Control to try and find it. But the reveal, when it comes, is both surprising and poignant. 

Jean finds out the answer when she is locked in the same cell where her sister Sara Grey (more on her later) died. As she is in captivity, she looks up and spots a damaged air conditioning vent labeled “VENTMAX. Only ENT is peeled away, so now it reads V Max. As it turns out, it was the last thing Sara saw before she died. So, V-Max was no MacGuffin. Well, you could call it a sort of MacGuffin if you stretch the definition a little.

2. What Does Jean Grey Really Want in Brand New Day?

Like the presence of Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield’s versions of Spider-Man in No Way Home, Sadie Sink’s character in Brand New Day was a badly kept secret (perhaps deliberately so). She indeed is Jean Grey, though that is not confirmed until much later. She is looking for her sister, and her only clue is the aforementioned V-Max.

Her arc in the movie is driven by grief rather than pure villainy. That said, she does do a few villainous things in the movie. For instance, she possesses innocent common people to achieve her own ends. She also manipulates Peter by making him believe that MJ knows who he is again.

3. What Is Happening to Peter Parker’s Body?

Throughout the movie, Peter Parker appears to be undergoing a mysterious physical transformation. He, for instance, becomes increasingly aggressive while in combat, his eyes sometimes turn completely black, and develops unnaturally sharp instincts (well, even sharper than before). He even has organic webs now (à la Maguire’s Spider-Man). Peter is afraid of losing control, so he uses a neural inhibitor that suppresses these mutations. But the inhibitor also weakens him. 

It is Jean Grey who helps him realize the truth of his condition. He can no longer separate Peter Parker from Spider-Man. When faced with impossible odds, Peter lets go of the inhibitor. Surprisingly, he does not instantly transform into an arachnid monster as he feared. He stays human and can still use his new abilities. These powers promise an interesting new future for Holland’s Spidey.

4. Who Is the Real Villain of Spider-Man: Brand New Day?

If you haven’t figured that out, the true antagonist is the head of the Department of Damage Control, Bill Metzger (Tramell Tillman), even if most of the movie presents Jean Grey as the Big Bad. Like in the comics, he is virulently anti-mutant. Ostensibly protecting the public, he and the people under him conducted secret experiments on mutants like Sara Grey. It is Peter who discovers the truth after spotting inconsistencies in Metzger’s account. 

Eventually, his mission changes from stopping Jean to rescuing her from Damage Control. Metzger, though, appears to have escaped. Perhaps his crusade against X-Men will be adapted from the comics to the big screen? In any case, I doubt this is the last we have seen of him.

5. How Does Jean Grey Save Spider-Man’s Life?

Well, Jean Grey does not so much as save Spidey’s life as she keeps him alive, using her “voodoo magic,” as Frank (Jon Bernthal) puts it. The Punisher accidentally shoots Peter while meaning to shoot Jean. Sensing the incoming bullet, Peter dives in front of Jean. Frank takes the critically injured Spider-Man to the hospital. But he is on the brink of death. It is then that Jean uses her telepathic powers to keep his mind and body alive. It is enough for doctors to stabilize him. He wakes up, and Frank tells him about Jean sustaining him the entire time.

6. Does Ned Remember Peter at the End of the Movie?

Yes, but we don’t know to what extent. Or at least that is what the ending of Spider-Man: Brand New Day suggests. In the scene, Peter introduces himself to Ned (Jacob Batalon). Ned seems to only recognize him from the housewarming party earlier. But the two friends, as though driven by instinct, perform their old handshake. It appears to unlock some hidden memory in Ned’s mind. He exclaims “Peter!” and the movie ends. It is almost certain that a part of him at least recognized Peter. Perhaps his memories of Peter have not fully returned, but are beginning to resurface.

7. Does MJ Remember Peter Too?

No, at least that is not revealed. But perhaps what happened to Ned will happen to MJ (Zendaya) too. She might also remember Peter through some common gesture or a pleasant shared memory. Earlier, Peter thought that she did remember him, but no. It was Jean controlling her like a puppet and manipulating Peter. Peter kissed her, thinking he had gotten her back, but later, he apologized. MJ responded by saying she has no memory of that kiss. And no, she does not know any Peter Parker. 

8. What Happens in the Spider-Man: Brand New Day Post-Credits Scenes?

Spider-Man: Brand New Day does have a post-credits scene. While it is very brief, it may have ramifications for the entire MCU. The scene features Ned’s Spider-Tracker app. We see it detecting Spider-Man. The signal appears to go farther and farther away from Earth. Then, there is a glitch, and we know Spider-Man is off-planet. It being a post-credits scene, of course there is no explanation.

It may be that this tease is a setup for Avengers: Doomsday and even, perhaps, Avengers: Secret Wars. We know Robert Downey Jr’s Doctor Doom will play a central role in both movies and it is almost certain Peter’s next adventure won’t be in New York. So, it makes sense. 

9. Why Is Yelena Belova in Spider-Man: Brand New Day?

Florence Pugh’s Yelena Belova, who is now part of the New Avengers (the best MCU superhero team easily), appears in a brief but important role in Brand New Day. Peter turns to her to help after he realizes that Metzger lied to him about Jean Grey. Yelena gets him Damage Control’s classified files. She also discovers the truth about Sara Grey. It is thanks to her that Peter comes to know that she was abducted and subjected to secret experiments by Damage Control.

The last we see her, she is seen continuing to decode the redacted files. This suggests more secrets awaiting discovery in future MCU projects.

10. How Does Spider-Man: Brand New Day Set Up the X-Men and Mutants?

Spider-Man: Brand New Day is a major turning point in the MCU, for it formally (without multiversal shenanigans) introduces Jean Grey into Earth-616. Then, there is her dead sister Sara Grey. She was also a mutant. Their powers made them targets for Damage Control. Their presence alone proves that the mutants are there in the MCU. The movie paves the road for Professor X, the X-Men, Magneto, and so on. Also, the inhibitors that Bruce Banner and Peter Parker use have parallels in the comics. They reminded me of mutant-suppressing inhibitor collars.

11. Why Is the Movie Called Spider-Man: Brand New Day?

It should be obvious if you have seen the movie. The movie is called Brand New Day, for it represents a literal Brand New Day, or a fresh start, for Peter Parker. In the beginning, we find him lonely and inhabiting a world that has forgotten his real identity. He has no support system, no love, and no friends. And yet, he persists in trying to rid New York City of crime. He is forced to build a new life and confront new threats without any assistance (which is why it is one of the best Tom Holland-led Spider-Man movies). The title harkens back to a 2008 storyline in Marvel Comics that similarly featured a new status quo (via Marvel.com).

By the end, though, the title takes on a new meaning. Peter has embraced the changes that happened to his body, and he is more powerful than ever now. Then there is Jean Grey, who begins a new chapter in her own life after discovering the truth about her sister. The title can also be interpreted as the beginning of MCU’s mutant saga in earnest.

12. How Does Spider-Man: Brand New Day Set Up Spidey’s Future?

The ending of the movie, as we have noted above, leaves Spidey in an interesting place. He is now stronger than he ever was, thanks to the new mutation. So, his new, enhanced abilities will come into play in his future adventures. Then, he has left for an unknown destination that is not on Earth. A new cosmic story beckons (if it is not a tease for Avengers: Doomsday that is)?

At the same time, Bill Metzger has fled, and this indicates that Damage Control’s anti-mutant agenda will remain an unresolved threat. Peter also may be losing his anonymity, as Ned is starting to remember him, piece by piece. All in all, we expect a central role for Spider-Man in the next two Avengers movies.

Sara Grey was Jean’s sister and was the reason Jean Grey briefly became an agent of chaos in New York City. Jean spends much of the movie believing her sister is alive.
