Chelsea caput manager Xabi Alonso has promised Estevao Willian that his opportunities volition travel aft admitting the Brazilian teen could beryllium frustrated by his deficiency of playing clip pursuing Wednesday's Carabao Cup elimination against Liverpool.

The 19-year-old was an unused substitute arsenic Chelsea suffered a 6-5 punishment shootout decision astatine Anfield, having drawn 1-1 successful mean time, contempt the lack of 2 established attacking players.

Cole Palmer was serving a suspension, portion Joao Pedro was unavailable done injury, circumstances that appeared to contiguous Estevao with an accidental to marque his lawsuit for a greater role.

Instead, Alonso selected Pedro Neto, Morgan Rogers and Danny Welbeck successful attack, leaving the erstwhile Palmeiras winger connected the seat passim the evening.

The determination attracted peculiar attraction due to the fact that Estevao had started Chelsea's erstwhile 2 League Cup fixtures and was seen warming up during the Liverpool encounter.

Travelling supporters adjacent chanted the Brazilian's sanction successful the 2nd half, but Alonso resisted calls to present him arsenic Chelsea yet exited the competition.

Speaking afterwards, the Spanish manager acknowledged the player's tendency for much minutes and insisted that his constricted engagement would not proceed indefinitely.

Alonso explains Liverpool snub and promises Estevao much opportunities

Asked astir Estevao's concern pursuing the defeat, Alonso admitted that the winger was improbable to beryllium satisfied with his existent role.

"I recognize his concern and that helium could beryllium happier, for sure," the Chelsea brag told reporters.

"Every subordinate wants to play, wants to beryllium portion of the team. We person had immoderate aggravated games, and determination volition beryllium moments for everything.

"I'm definite that Este volition person his moment. It's my work and we request to woody with that."

Alonso subsequently explained wherefore helium had decided against introducing the Brazilian astatine Anfield, pointing to the carnal demands of the contention and the substitutions necessitated by problems elsewhere successful his team.

Maxence Lacroix was forced disconnected with a hamstring injury, portion Moises Caicedo and Malo Gusto besides required attraction during the 2nd half.

"We started with Pedro [Neto], with Danny [Welbeck] and with Morgan [Rogers] up front," Alonso explained.

"The crippled had precise aggravated moments. We knew that it was going to beryllium physical.

"And aft we had to woody with Moi [Caicedo], helium had small problems. Malo [Gusto], arsenic well, helium had cramps. So we were a small spot forced with substitutions."

Nevertheless, Chelsea did find country to present different forward, with Emmanuel Emegha replacing Welbeck and subsequently missing a punishment successful the shootout.

Alonso besides suggested that Estevao's adaptation to the carnal strength of English shot remains an important consideration.

"We cognize that the Premier League and the crippled successful England is truly intense," helium said.

"You request to beryllium up for it. Este has played, for sure, it's his 2nd season. But helium had the wounded and he's successful that process.

"Trust me, I'm definite the play is going to beryllium agelong and Este is going to play his role."

The reassurance comes astatine a clip erstwhile Estevao is struggling to found himself successful Alonso's plans, contempt having demonstrated his quality to power important matches during his debut run astatine Stamford Bridge.

Estevao's Brazil signifier highlights Chelsea enactment dilemma

Alonso's comments travel amid a striking opposition betwixt Estevao's relation astatine nine level and his engagement with the Brazil nationalist team.

The teen has yet to commencement a Premier League lucifer this season, making six substitute appearances totalling conscionable 53 minutes. His lone 2 starts for Chelsea successful 2026-27 came successful the earlier rounds of the Carabao Cup.

By comparison, Brazil caput manager Carlo Ancelotti gave Estevao a salient relation during the September-October planetary break.

The winger featured successful each 3 of Brazil's matches against Australia and India, starting doubly and producing a extremity and an assistance successful the 4-0 triumph implicit India.

It was different objection of the attacking quality that persuaded Chelsea to motion him from Palmeiras, having antecedently shown flashes of his imaginable during his archetypal play successful English football.

Indeed, Estevao scored 8 goals for Chelsea successful 2025-26, including a memorable effort against Barcelona successful the Champions League, earlier a hamstring wounded brought his run to a premature extremity and ruled him retired of the World Cup.

However, Alonso's preferred strategy has analyzable his way into the starting XI.

Pedro Neto has often been deployed connected the right, including successful a wing-back role, portion Palmer and Rogers connection alternatives successful much cardinal attacking positions.

Estevao's strengths prevarication successful receiving possession connected the right, attacking defenders straight and cutting wrong onto his stronger near foot. Accommodating those qualities wrong Alonso's tactical operation has proved hard truthful far.

The Brazilian's constricted opportunities besides rise questions astir however Chelsea mean to negociate his development, peculiarly present that their Carabao Cup run has ended.

The contention had provided him with his lone starts this season, meaning that aboriginal opportunities volition person to travel elsewhere.

Chelsea instrumentality to Premier League enactment against Manchester United astatine Stamford Bridge connected Saturday, with Alonso seeking a effect to consecutive defeats against Tottenham and Liverpool.

Whether Estevao plays a important portion successful that brushwood remains unclear, but his manager has publically accepted work for uncovering him much opportunities.

After Wednesday's omission, Alonso's assurance that the teen volition yet person his infinitesimal is apt to look expanding scrutiny if his concern remains unchanged.
