WNBA star Brittney Griner files for divorce from wife Cherelle after 8 years of marriage, 1 child together

Brittney Griner and her wife, Cherelle Griner, are calling it quits after nearly eight years together.

The WNBA star filed for divorce in Fulton County, Georgia, on Thursday, according to court documents obtained by Page Six.

In the filing, Brittney described the marriage as “irretrievably broken” and said the pair has been separated since July 24.

The 35-year-old sports star is also seeking joint legal custody of the couple’s 2-year-old son, Bash.

A rep for Brittney did not immediately respond to Page Six’s request for comment. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution was first to report the news.

The Connecticut Sun center and Cherelle, an attorney, first met while attending Baylor University in Texas before tying the knot in June 2018.

However, some earlier reports had incorrectly stated they married in 2019.

Their relationship first made headlines in 2022 when Cherelle, 33, became one of the most vocal advocates for Griner’s release after the basketball star was detained in Russia for carrying vape cartridges containing cannabis oil in her luggage.

Brittney was later convicted on drug-smuggling charges and sentenced to nine years in a Russian penal colony before being freed in a high-profile prisoner exchange in December 2022.

The couple welcomed their first child, son Bash, in July 2024, with Brittney previously gushing that becoming a mother had changed her perspective on life and basketball.

“My whole phone has turned into him now,” she said during an interview with CBS Sports at the time.

This marks Brittney’s second divorce. The Olympic gold medalist was previously married to fellow WNBA player Glory Johnson. Their marriage lasted just weeks before Brittney filed for an annulment in 2015.
