The John Tuggle story is often considered the ultimate underdog tale in professional sports. In the 1983 NFL Draft, he was the very last pick, which earned him the title of “Mr. Irrelevant,” and that’s a nickname traditionally given to the final player chosen (via Giants).
Now, the label might sound dismissive, but Tuggle proved he was anything but irrelevant because after being drafted by the New York Giants, he earned a roster spot under head coach Bill Parcells. Despite low expectations, his positive work ethic paid off, and Tuggle was named the team’s Special Teams Player of the Year.
However, his potential and career were cut short because after his first season, Tuggle was diagnosed with a rare cancer in 1984, following a car accident. He passed away young in 1986, at the age of 25, but his impact on the team remained profound. In the 1986 season, the Giants won their first Super Bowl Championship, with his jersey number on their helmets, to pay homage to their fallen teammate.
David Corenswet on Starring in Mr. Irrelevant’s Biopic
David Corenswet in Superman | Credits: DC Studios To anyone, portraying John Tuggle is more than just an acting role. David Corenswet emphasized how the movie is not about football, but a man’s emotional journey, and the way he defined optimism. While talking to People, here’s what the artist said:
Can grace and dignity and humor and love transform failure into its own kind of success? These are the questions I thought were asked by John’s story and I think are asked of each of us at various points in life. I love a reminder to smile at the person in front of me, or smile to myself, and just marvel at the reality of the moment. I think John served as that kind of reminder to a lot of people.
It seems like the movie won’t portray John Tuggle solely as an athlete, but as a symbol of courage and compassion. So, what do you think about this biopic? And will you be eager to watch it during the holiday season?
