“We were trying to get their motion”: Rockstar Hosted Mocap Parties to Capture the True Spirit of GTA 5’s DJ Collaboration

Rockstar took their motion capture to another level by inviting various DJs, including The Black Madonna, to MoCap parties with fans and captured the entire set live with real reactions and music. This is largely why DJ parties in GTA 5 Online look so nice.

GTA 5 is by far the most successful game in the history of video games, and it is largely due to its online community, who are dedicated to keeping the game going for as long as they can.

Even Rockstar has done a great job in keeping GTA Online as relevant as it was upon launch years ago. The amount of work done by the developer behind the screen speaks volumes of its inevitable success. Even while incorporating DJ shows in the game, Rockstar went all in.

Ivan Pavlovich, the music director at Rockstar, talked about the lengths to which the studio went to motion capture the DJs for its online community and why they chose to do it that way. He said:

We were trying to get their motion, their energy as a DJ. We called them signature moves, the way they throw their hands up or dance a little bit — like Black Madonna does certain moves with the cross fader that are maybe different than Solomun. It was a way for us to capture their natural environment.

Radios have always played an important part in the Grand Theft Auto franchise since its inception. Each channel is detailed to the core with different music for people of all tastes. According to Rockstar, players have streamed more than 76 billion minutes of music from the game’s 18 radio stations.

While filming the DJ sets for GTA 5, Pavlovich and the team did not want to leave any stone unturned. They wanted to explore every detail that goes behind as well as in front of the stage.

Their efforts paid off well at the end of the day since DJs became an instant hit with the game’s player community, who played an active role in contributing to its success.
