Since it was unveiled that The Batman sequel was delayed by another year, many were startled, as the film was initially set to debut later this year. Although some felt the multiple delays might’ve something to do with the alleged brewing tension between Reeves’ The Batman Epic Crime Saga and James Gunn’s DCU, things seem a lot simpler.
Reeves, who has been penning the story for quite some time, cleared the air surrounding the change in plans, and it seems, we might be in for an adaptation of one revered storyline.
Matt Reeves hints towards The Long Halloween‘s adaptation
The Long Halloween‘s impact on the caped crusader can’t be overstated, as it highlighted Batman’s detective skills and massively inspired the groundwork for Christopher Nolan‘s The Dark Knight trilogy. Walking in Nolan’s footsteps, Matt Reeves also drew inspiration from The Long Halloween‘s revered storyline, including Carmine Falcone’s connection to Catwoman.
However, it seems Reeves is aiming to adapt The Long Halloween for the sequel, as the filmmaker explained (via Deadline) that they’re continuing the story, which heavily implies the former’s possibility.
I can’t really tell you anything about it except that we’re really excited. We’re continuing the story…I’m really excited to be making it, to get our cast back together, to get new people involved, and we’re really excited about it.
If this is indeed the case, Joker could end up being one of the main players in the storyline, given his involvement in the original run. As for the multiple delays, the filmmaker expressed that it boiled down to his personal issues, as he added that a lot is going on in his life.
Matt Reeves touched on his approach to Joker
Considering the general consensus regarding Joker has notably shifted since the Joker 2 fiasco, things could very well change for the better if Barry Keoghan gets it right in The Batman Epic Crime Saga. Moreover, Reeves is eyeing to bring something new to the table for the Joker, which would be the optimal way to go for it (via THR).
The only way to do it is to feel like you’re earning your place because otherwise you’re just doing more, and people are going like, ‘Well, we’ve seen it, so what do you got for us?’ So how can it be the thing we love, but also something we haven’t seen? That’s always the challenge. So with a character like that, that would have to be the bar.
With the shooting set to commence next year, Reeves shared that he is excited by the prospect of getting back on set, and hopefully, there won’t be any more delays.
The Batman 2 is slated to hit theatres in October of 2027.
