The success of One Piece Live-Action was unprecedented. The marketing and promotional events helped the audience warm up to the actors, which eventually played a huge role in the positive reception of the series. While all the actors did great and justified their presence in the series, Mackenyu resembled Zoro far too much.
Even before the series aired, his appearance and aura were reminiscent of Zoro. Mackenyu shared in an interview that he didn’t want anyone else to be playing Zoro besides him.

Anyone would expect a character as popular and as strong as Zoro to be extremely difficult to portray, but Mackenyu’s experience tells a different tale. The actor makes it all sound like a piece of cake and is looking forward to giving it his all in the future as well!
Mackenyu Hopes for Better Action in One Piece Live-Action Season 2

He’s pretty straightforward and direct, and hardly leaves anything to be read between the lines. However, he’s an absolute monster who can wield and swing three swords at a time. His slashes are thunderous, and that makes him an extremely challenging character to portray physically.
Mackenyu did a great job in bringing all these aspects to life as Zoro, but seemingly, it wasn’t as challenging as one might think. In an interview with Cosmopolitan, Mackenyu was asked about the physical training he went through for the character. The actor shared that the role wasn’t as hard as he was expecting it to be.
I was expecting a lot more challenging fights for Zoro, but it’s still season 1. So we can do better season 2 and in the future, hopefully. I’m looking forward for better action and better moves for Zoro.
This statement is surprising considering how Zoro had a substantial number of fights even during the first season. Every arc had a fight in store for the actor. It’s interesting how he made it sound like nothing, given how much effort must have gone into swinging the swords and making it all look effortless. However, Mackenyu isn’t alone in looking forward to Netflix’s One Piece season 2, most fans are equally excited for the series’ future.

His expectations might be fulfilled if we look at how the story progresses in the manga. Eiichiro Oda puts Zoro in situations, where we see how ruthless he can be. Zoro spars with a lot of opponents from Whisky Peak to Drum Kingdom.
Most of these fights demonstrate the difference between him and his opponents. It’ll be a great change from what we have seen in the previous season. Besides the fight sequences, Mackenyu’s acting will have to undergo a massive change as well. Zoro opens up a lot more with the other Straw Hats.
Initially, he was quite stern, but as the story progresses and he grows closer to the crew; he loosens up a little. Mackenyu has played the serious aspects of his character quite well, now it’s time for the silly! Just the thought is enough to make fans reminisce about the initial charm of One Piece. Hopefully, the actors will be successful in enlivening it.
