And then the good and decent people of Mississauga showed what they can do.

“Our city crews are tops,” Mayor Carolyn Parrish said.

They were not going to leave that mess for long. Hate-filled and disturbing messages were spray-painted on the walls, doorway and sidewalk at St. Aloysius Gonzaga Secondary School and the adjoining Erin Meadows Community Centre on Tuesday. However, by the end of the day, it had all been removed.

Sad morning in Mississauga. Disgusting graffiti on St.Aloysius Gonzaga S.S. City staff pulled out all the stops and there’s no trace of any of it shortly thereafter. It was a symbolic gesture that brings to mind the broken windows theory where, if you leave the broken window or spray-painted wall as is, there will be more crime to come.

Antisemitic smears

This was also about making sure kids going to the Catholic school, or to swim, or to the library won’t have to face the vile scrawlings.

It was not pretty. It was as ugly and vile as this kind of racism can be. There were smears including “Israel kills kids,” “Israel spit on Christians,” and “Allahu Akbar,” and mention of the ‘Committee of 300′ consiracy theory as well.

Some of the other screeds were actual paragraphs in what appeared like a wild manifesto. But the criminals’ hate wasn’t there very long.

Parrish posted pictures on her X account showing before-and-after views of the scene.

“Our city staff were very upset,” she told the Sun.

She said staffers “dropped everything” and got to work with the help of graffiti-removing experts.

“I am so proud of them,” she said.

Police are taking it seriously

Calling what happened “disgusting,” the mayor is also supportive of the Peel Regional Police effort to arrest the culprits.

Stay tuned on that. This is not a minor crime. It’s a hate crime.

Peel police sources indicate there is a robust investigation underway. They are taking this seriously and have a good start since there are dozens of cameras on that property and across the street at Erin Mills Town Centre.

Time will tell who did this and also who may have directed it.

The culprits need to know that they will not be able to easily get away with this. There are cameras everywhere now — not just the ones near where the vandalism happened, but also along the escape route. Even where the culprits may have bought the spray paint.
