Let’s just say Blue Jays fan Phil Faiazza won the prize for best treat for his wife, Laura Kay.

The Niagara Region couple were actually married Oct. 31, 2015, and always enjoy their Halloween-themed anniversaries.

But for this year’s 10th anniversary he really wanted to do something special. When he saw that Game 6 of the World Series was on Fright Night between the Jays and the Los Angeles Dodgers, he knew exactly what to do.

“I broke out my wallet,” he teased as he and his bride rode in on a very excited but nervous GO train before the big game.

EXPENSIVE TRICK OR TREAT

But it was worth every penny because his wife was both surprised and thrilled.

“Halloween is my favourite holiday,” she said. “I wore a goth dress at my wedding, and I always dress up every year.”

She painted her face this time and couldn’t believe her good fortune marrying her great guy who really gets her.

“It couldn’t be more perfect,” she said.

Even though he paid $1,500 a ticket, people on the train without tickets were telling Phil he won’t miss the $3,000 but will never forget being inside the stadium for a night like this.

Laura agreed. Happy wife, happy life.

You could really feel the anticipation coming in for this game. Fans were anticipating the moment but were also cautious, understanding there is nothing easy about winning the World Series at any time and especially against the defending champs. They knew no matter the outcome this was one special night of Game 6 in the 6ix.

ROGERS CENTRE BEST PLACE TO CELEBRATE HALLOWEEN

The Rogers Centre staff did a nice job of matching the two important dates by mixing in pre-game Halloween music like Werewolves of London by Warren Zevon, Highway to Hell by AC/DC and Ghostbusters by Ray Parker Jr.

This night will go down in Toronto history for many reasons — one of which is the collision that is already busy Halloween night combined with the World Series game that brought almost an extra 100,000 people downtown.

There were 50,000 or so at the Rogers Centre, another 20,000 inside Scotiabank Arena for the watch party, plus thousands at Nathan Phillips Square to watch on the big screen, and every bar and pub jammed to the rafters.

The Canadian anthem sung by retired warrant officer David Grenon, also known as SoulBear and who spent 25 years in the Canadian Armed Forces, seemed like an upgrade from two of the games. No changed words and great energy. Plus the crowd helped him out and sang “all thy sons command.”

Toronto Police were well prepared. They have been around for previous celebrations and prefer those to protests. But there is nothing easy about tens of thousands exciting a sports stadium, let alone two.

This was some hot ticket. If you think about the Halloween anniversary couple paying $3,000, that was actually a “steal” since some tickets on social media were going for as much as $48,000. People want to be part of history.

With her brother Roger, Rose Goulah, of Langley B.C., flew in on a red-eye flight to be at Game 6 and managed to secure their tickets for $1,200.

But as Sun photographer Jack Boland pointed out, the best deal in town arrived on game day.

TICKET FRENZY

Many lined up at the Rogers Centre before the sun came up to have a chance at some last-minute standing-room-only tickets selling for just $300. The Loonie Dog Kings, Ryan Rushton and Jody Matheson, were first in line. Andrea Boitor and her daughter Catharine and Ben Holt also managed to score their way in.

For those that didn’t have tickets, there was the restaurant inside the Marriott City Centre Hotel in Rogers Centre, which has an amazing view from the outfield.

This was Kathryn Jefferies’ birthday so she drove down from Orillia to celebrate it in a special way. They managed to get into the restaurant to get the World Series vibe, but only until game time. Then the ticketed people came in.

The mother and daughter didn’t mind, however, because they got to watch batting practice and got lots of comments on their unique costumes.

Another person everybody who has covered the Blue Jays was happy for was Steve Medeiros, who has worked in the media room at the Rogers Centre for decades and has been working Blue Jays games since that first year at the dome in 1989.

Steve literally has tattoos on his arms and legs of all his favourite Blue Jays.

“I have been here for all of it,” he said. “And I still love every minute of it.”

He’s got a spot picked out for another one.
