Vampire Princess Miyu Gets Blu-ray Release by Animeigo After 38 Years

AnimEigo and its parent company MediaOCD have announced the Blu-ray release of the 1988 original video animation (OVA) Vampire Princess Miyu. Directed by Toshihiro Hirano and written by Noboru Aikawa, this four-part anime OVA is historically significant in the anime industry, as it introduced Western audiences to the supernatural anime horror genre.

When and Where Will the Vampire Princess Miyu Blu-ray Be Available?

The Blu-ray for the Vampire Princess Miyu anime will be available from September 8th, 2026; however, it can be preordered right now on the official MediaOCD store website. For those looking forward to the pre-order, be quick as the distribution is very limited.  The suggested retail price for this Blu-ray box is set at $24.95 on the website.

The packaging for this Blu-ray box is quite unique, as there will be no cover art at all. On the website, we can see that the packaging is nothing more than the necessary information on the back, with the title in a basic black font over a white background. This has never happened before in the anime industry.

The reason there is no artwork is that the artwork simply could not be approved; however, having no artwork also makes this a unique edition on its own. Founded in 1989, AnimEigo has historically prioritized high-quality translations and accessibility over prolonged delays, leading to this unconventional packaging decision to ensure the media reaches the public.

Is Vampire Princess Miyu TV Anime Included in the Blu-ray?

In the Blu-ray edition that is being released, it only contains the 4 episodes of the OVA that were released in 1988. Almost a decade after that, AIC Studio released a 26-episode anime that was broadcast on Japanese television and was practically an alternate adaptation of the story. However, this 26-episode version is not included in the box.

Each episode in the box possesses a runtime of approximately 30 minutes. Furthermore, in addition to the remastered high-definition visual track, the release features localized audio options. The disc includes both the United States and the United Kingdom English dubs.

What Is Vampire Princess Miyu About?

The story of this anime follows Miyu, who is an entity possessing the appearance of a beautiful, doll-like young girl but emits a strange aura. She ends up revealing her true identity when Himiko, who is a spiritualist investigating a series of murders, confronts her. It turns out that Miyu is a vampire; in fact, she is royalty who is engaged in a violent war against demonic beings known as Shinma.

The 4-episode OVA follows Himiko as she is drawn into Miyu’s conflict across time and space itself. In the first episode, titled “Unearthly Kyoto,” Himiko travels to Japan’s ancient capital to perform an exorcism. After the exorcism fails, she discovers Miyu and her silent companion, leading to questions regarding Miyu’s true motives and involvement in local attacks.

The second episode, “A Banquet of Marionettes,” shifts focus to a school experiencing mysterious disappearances connected to strange dolls. Miyu infiltrates the school as a student and targets the school’s hero, Kei, forcing him to choose between eternal life and eternal love.

In the third episode, “Fragile Armor,” Himiko assists Miyu against an armored monster. Meanwhile, during their time together, Miyu explains the origins of her partnership with Larva, her mysterious companion in black. At the same time, Himiko uncovers the tragic history of a husband and wife connected to the monster’s armor. Finally, in the final episode, “Frozen Time,” Himiko returns to Kamakura, her childhood home, where Miyu starts haunting Himiko’s childhood memories.
