Two people were found dead Tuesday after a fire engulfed their recreational vehicle parked in a remote, forested area in South Kootenay.

Trail RCMP were called to help Kootenay Boundary Fire Rescue on May 12 as they battled the RV fire in the area of Seven Mile Dam, about 15 kilometres south of Trail in southeastern B.C.

“The fire was reported as a fully engulfed RV that had been parked in a remote location, and at the time it was unknown whether anyone was inside,” said Cpl. Brett Urano of the B.C. RCMP in a news release.

After fire crews put out the blaze and kept it from spreading into the surrounding forest, two people were found in the fire debris.

Police secured the scene and investigated while efforts were made to determine the identities of the fire victims.

“It has since been determined that the fire is not suspicious in nature and no foul play has been identified,” said Urano. The investigation has been turned over to the B.C. Coroners Service.

“This is a deeply tragic incident, and our thoughts are with the families and loved ones of those who lost their lives,” said Urano. “We also want to acknowledge the efforts of the fire crews who prevented further damage in what could have become a larger wildfire situation.”
