According to new reports, Romo has been issued a citation for “refusing to take a test for intoxication after arrest.” The claims were made in court records, marking the latest update in the former NFL star’s OWI case.

The outlet reported that the media personality was taken into police custody on July 23 after playing in the 2026 Wisconsin Amateur Championship golf tournament. He finished in a tie for 73rd place at the tournament, with his worst score of the week, 82, occurring on the day of his arrest.

As stated, Romo became an avid golfer after leaving the NFL and has frequently participated in golf tournaments like the Wisconsin Amateur Championship. His achievements include becoming a three-time winner of the American Century Championship celebrity golf tournament, per US Weekly.

Romo’s OWI arrest occurred on the night of July 23, with The Blast reporting that he was pulled over while driving southbound on Interstate 43 in Milwaukee. Authorities claimed he was taken into custody on suspicion of operating a vehicle.

The charge was leveled against Romo after he allegedly performed poorly during several field sobriety tests. He has since been scheduled to appear in court to face the allegations on September 21, causing a stir amongst fans as he isn’t known for legal troubles.

More details about Romo’s interaction with cops during the July 23 incident were revealed thanks to a search warrant obtained by ABC affiliate WISN. Milwaukee County deputies claimed he had bloodshot and glassy eyes after he was pulled over.

The document claimed Romo had been stopped after allegedly traveling at a high speed while passing other vehicles during the heavy rush hour traffic in the Marquette Interchange. The deputy who stopped Romo added:

“While speaking with Romo, I detected a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage emitting from his breath.”

The deputy noted the former athlete denied drinking, noting he was coming from a golf course and heading out to meet his parents. The officer claimed Romo initially wanted to call his lawyer when he was told to get out of the vehicle and perform field sobriety tests. However, he later agreed but filmed the whole process on his phone.

Besides receiving a citation for allegedly refusing to cooperate with authorities, the OWI incident has cost Romo his spot at the 56th M&P Group Texas State Open golf tournament. KLTV reported that the Cascades Country Club confirmed his withdrawal from the competition in an email.

“Although we’re disappointed he won’t be joining us, we’re still looking forward to an exciting week of competitive golf,” a spokesperson for the country club wrote. A reason for his withdrawal wasn’t included, but all signs pointed to the OWI incident.

Romo has been a regular at the golf tournament, as he competed yearly. In 2025, he reportedly played two rounds, shooting a 69 in the first and a 76 in the second. Unfortunately, he wasn’t able to continue in the competition because his scores didn’t meet the cut.

Romo won’t be playing at the golf tournament, but his job as a color analyst on CBS’ NFL broadcast team remains secure. The Daily Mail reported that a CBS executive confirmed the news, saying the OWI incident wasn’t “going to get him fired.”

A source echoed similar sentiments, declaring that the media personality wouldn’t lose his job. “While the incident is unquestionably serious, those around him view it as an isolated lapse in judgment rather than something that defines him,” they claimed.

The source added that Romo understood he had “disappointed” his colleagues and family with his “terrible decision” and was focused on redeeming himself. They noted he would “keep a low profile while focusing on getting himself ready for the upcoming season.”
