Tom Rhys Harries‘ Clayface is setting out to be an iconic movie that could redefine James Gunn and Peter Safran’s DCU. With an iconic trailer released, Harries just confirmed to Interview Magazine that there are three “brilliant” acts to Clayface and that the whole thing works like a Greek tragedy.
Judging from the trailer, the movie does feel like a man’s descent into self-doubt and the cost of vanity that just keeps taking a toll on him. Talking about the story of the upcoming DCU movie, here’s what Tom Rhys Harries had to say about the depth that screenwriter Mike Flanagan and Hossein Amini brought to Clayface.
I love the script. I love what Mike Flanagan and Hossein Amini wrote. They’ve built these three brilliant acts. It’s almost like a Greek tragedy. There’s so much depth.
The actor ended his statements by saying the film explores the endless possibilities that come with being a human being. Naturally, there’s a general assumption and hype amongst fans that Clayface might just turn out to be one of DCU’s finest movies out there.
Clayface Is Setting Out to Be DCU’s Finest

However, the trailer has set high expectations for the upcoming movie. Not to mention the fact that horror legend Mike Flanagan (The Haunting of Hill House, Oculus, Midnight Mass) is attached to the project as the screenplay writer.
With Tom Rhys Harries claiming that Clayface is divided into three brilliant acts that act like a Greek tragedy, it seems that Clayface might just turn out to be one of the finest movies in the DCU that the world will ever see. On an estimated budget of $40 million (via IMDb), the horror-esque movie could become a high-profit box office puller, especially with the marketing that the film has been doing.
Naturally, it seems that the introduction of Matt Hagen, aka Clayface, in the DCU could open a darker, more mature cinematic universe for James Gunn that allows the director to include darker storylines and handle complex topics in the future.
How Tom Rhys Harries’ Clayface Could Set Up a Darker DCU
A still from Clayface | Credits: Warner Bros.Well, the storyline for Clayface is already dark since it talks about an actor losing his vanity. Wanting fame and love from the world, Tom Rhys Harries’ Matt Hagen is forced to go into darkness when an experimental surgery leaves his face like clay. Taking vengeance against his wrongdoers, Clayface tells the story of an anti-hero who has to hide himself from the world.
Naturally, the storyline is quite mature compared to DCU’s other movies like Superman (which had a very optimistic outlook). The release of this movie could potentially offset the tone of the DCU and bring in a neutral world where the good and the bad coexist.
That would be quite perfect for James Gunn since the DCU has several storylines that cannot be whitewashed with a happy-go-lucky feel and need to be told in a darker tone. Meanwhile, fans are quite excited for the release of Clayface and how it might have lasting impacts on the cinematic universe.
