Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman

SUMMARY

  • Tom Cruise believed in monogamy while Nicole Kidman stated that monogamy was unnatural during their marriage.
  • This difference in opinion is poetic considering how their life turned out two decades after their marriage.
  • Cruise not only rejected polygamy, but also psychiatry and the traditional marriage counseling.

Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman’s love blossomed on the sets of Days of Thunder and the couple swiftly got married in 1990. It was a high-profile relationship that couldn’t escape the paparazzi at all. They adopted two children, born in 1992 and 1995. However, the relationship didn’t work out and they called it quits in 2001. Interestingly, there were some glaring differences in the couples’ views about relationships.

When asked about the concept of monogamy, Kidman and Cruise totally disagreed with each other. Kidman found monogamy unnatural, while Cruise pointed out the sanctity of a family unit. It is surprising how things turned out for both Kidman and Cruise in the following two decades.

Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman went their separate ways in 2001 after a decade-long marriage. It was Cruise’s second and Kidman’s first marriage. Interestingly, a couple of years before their split, they famously had a difference of opinion about monogamy. Kidman was clear about her stance in her interview with Newsweek, “Monogamy is not a natural way of being” (via Today).

However, Cruise didn’t agree with her when asked about her statement. Cruise shared that he believed in monogamy and the concept of a family unit. He even criticized the then-state of a family unit, calling it “disintegrated.” He shared:

I believe in monogamy. I want and I love relationships. I believe in the family unit. It is important, the family unit. Look at where the family unit has gone. It’s disintegrated.

It was not just polygamy that the Mission: Impossible actor had a problem with. He rejected psychiatry and hence traditional marriage counseling. He invited major criticisms when he shared, “Look, psychiatry doesn’t work.” Cruise also had terrible claims about what marriage counseling did, “They say, ‘Hey, promiscuity is a part of marriage. It’s okay.’ You have this whole thing going out there.”

The only kind of marriage counseling he believed in was the one in Scientology, claiming that it “actually helps to put people back in communication with one another.” Cruise and Kidman’s adopted kids, Isabella and Connor, both are Scientologists.

After Cruise, Kidman started dating Lenny Kravitz in 2003. In 2005, she met her now-husband Keith Urban. The country singer married The Perfect Couple actress in June 2006. She shared with The Daily Telegraph that she had a great relationship with Urban, sharing, “We didn’t really know each other – we got to know each other during our marriage.”

Urban credited her with helping him overcome his struggles with alcohol addiction. The couple’s first daughter was born in 2008 and they welcomed their second daughter in 2010. They share a long and happy married life.

Meanwhile, Cruise had a relationship with Penélope Cruz after Kidman. In 2005, he started dating Katie Holmes. They had their daughter Suri in 2006 and got married later that year. In 2012, Holmes filed for divorce from Cruise. He later admitted that Holmes separated from him to protect Suri from Scientology (via The HuffPost). There are no confirmed reports of Cruise’s dating life after Holmes.

Page Six reported that the actor continues to be estranged from Suri even after a decade. Despite having visitation rights, Cruise doesn’t always spend time with Suri. Some sources attribute this to the fact that practicing members of his organization are not allowed to associate with non-believers.
