The SNL funnyman was presented with a box of Tim Hortons Timbits by TIFF CEO Cameron Baily on Wednesday night following the gala screening of Ferrell’s new movie, Will & Harper, at Roy Thomson Hall in Toronto.

One of the repeated bits in the funny, poignant documentary, which follows Ferrell and former SNL head writer Harper Steele on a 16-day road trip through America following Steele’s announcement of her transition, is Ferrell’s desire to go to Dunkin’ Donuts.

“You know about Timbits?” asked Bailey, as he passed the box to Ferrell.

“Funny story, I was good friends with Tim Horton’s grandson Jeremy,” joked Ferrell.

“Really?” an astonished Bailey asked.

“No,” countered Ferrell, who then decided to immediately pop a Timbit into his mouth.

Ferrell, 57, and Steele, 63, a native of Iowa City, met in 1995 on their first day of work at SNL when Steele was still going by what she now calls her “dead name,” Andrew Steele.

The duo head out in Steele’s car to visit everywhere from Wal-Mart parking lots to the Grand Canyon, diners and honky tonks, and for the most part they are welcomed, even in an Oklahoma bar that includes a spontaneous and moving drum performance by Native Americans.

But they also get hate tweets after an uncomfortable meal at a Texas steakhouse.

“I think there’s also a thirsting for civility out there that is palpable,” Ferrell said during the post-screening Q&A. “Everyone just wants to be kind to each other and what we got to see is an extension of that.”
